“Enjoyable stay in a unique setting”

We recently returned from our stay at the bamboo home on the Big Island. I'll offer up my thoughts below.

General Observations:
- There are a total of 4 rental homes spread out in a 6 acre setting (There is also Mark's home). During our stay, only one other home was rented and we barely noticed them.
- The home was very nice and just as described from other reviews.
- The saline pool was nicer than imagined. We all loved it.
- Not a long drive to the town of Pahoa. Funky little town with a decent selection of restaurants (although they close early).
- Unfortunately, we didn't get to meet Mark. He was traveling and had a friend (Chris) take care of us. She was very helpful and was a fine host.
- There are over 5,000 palm trees in the lot. We enjoyed walking around one morning and finding our favorites (lots of varieties).
- It was a ~15 minute walk to the Champagne Tide Pools and a longer walk to the Kapoho Tide Pools. (We also found a semi-private pool in between that we loved). We found the Champagne Pools a bit forgettable in the grand scheme of things. We LOVED the Kapoho Tide Pools (It's probably worth driving to these). The snorkeling in these was out of this world. (Schedule your visit so you arrive 2 hours prior to high tide for maximum enjoyment).
- Reasonable drive to Volcano National Park. Check out the Jaggar Museum at dusk and watch the lava in the caldera (mesmerizing). The Kilauea Iki hike was one of our all time favorite hikes (Rain forest to volcano crater to a lava tube. Amazing)
- We also drove down to where you the road ends and you can rent bikes to pedal in to see the lava enter the ocean at dusk. Definitely a highlight of our trip. HIGHLY recommend.

Home Comments:
- The beds were super comfy. The bathrooms were very nice. It was a very peaceful setting.
- We are mid-westerners, so we are used to air conditioning, but we didn't miss it. There are plenty of fans and there was enough breeze to keep it pleasant at all times.
- We didn't find the bugs to be much of an issue at all. We had a few gecko visitors which were fun to watch.
- A few mild critiques of the set up: The house had a charcoal grill in lieu of a stove. We all agreed that a propane grill would have definitely been welcomed (cooking outside was fun, but you need to plan you meals accordingly). An upright refrigerator instead of a chest refrigerator would have been an improvement. It would also be helpful if there were a source of ice on site. (Flying in from the lower 48, we weren't in a position to bring igloo coolers, etc)

In summary, the visit was just as nice as hoped and we all agreed would definitely be happy to do it again. We thought the recycling / solar / green vibe of the place was awesome. I would definitely recommend this home to others.

“Tranquil and Way Off the Grid”
Reviewed 21 March 2017 for a stay in March 2017

This is a great location if you want to get away from the hotels and discover a very tranquil part of the island. Mark is an excellent host with helpful recommendations and the property is charming and unique, clean and comfortable, set in a beautiful palm garden. The region contains many hidden gems and good eats and the nearby Wednesday Farmer's Market is not to be missed.

“Unspoilt relaxation in a beautiful building with rainforest surroundings”
Reviewed 6 November 2016 for a stay in November 2016

This came right up to expectations, a lovely location and building that ticked all the eco boxes, even down to the hand operated washer, but by no means back to basics. Great attention to detail with good toiletries and lovely fittings that made our bamboo retreat feel very comfortable. With only four other units on the site and with the surrounding planting there was a real feeling of seclusion. The local town provided all we needed by way of provisions and restaurants. the tide pools and hot pools were a short drive away and a day trip around the volcano sites with a local guide added to our enjoyment of this beautiful island. The owner was very helpful and knowledgeable,

“Lush, tropical and unique”
Reviewed 2 November 2016 for a stay in October 2016

We were greeted by our friendly host/owner Mark with just a phone call. He showed us our place we rented, one of 4 he owns and manages here. You feel like you are in a private and unique jungle location where you hardly know there are other rental homes on the same property. The house had 3 bedrooms with high ceilings and fans to keep you cool and comfortable. We live in the suburbs so we had a little adjusting to the low lighting in the bathrooms and minimal internet access but enjoyed the escape noting it is really an Eco stay! The place felt calming and has some nice landscaping with ongoing improvements to his retreats we noted during our stay.
Mark was easily reached when needed by just a quick walk over to his home on the property, He had a sweet dog who visited us too, our 20 yo and her friend who stayed with us were delighted with him and would look for him to hang out with them. We were able to get some helpful recommendations and directions on activities from our host as well as snorkel gear that was in great condition we could borrow!
Remember this is a remote location with some bugs and had some fire ants that did give us a few bites we will remember always. We enjoyed the great hammock and large porch, beautiful bamboo construction and ability to have refrigerated beverages/food, ice and cook some rice along with our BBQ so we were able to stay in for some meals. Beds are very soft and comfortable, showers had shampoo and soap provided.
So, more hooks to hang stuff in bathrooms and bedrooms, a larger mirror in bathrooms as well as a broom/dustpan would have been the only improvements I could make on this awesome rental. Thanks Mark!

“Wonderful place to spend time.”

A group of 6 spent two nights at this lovely property. The recently built bamboo house was a delight and very spacious. It was thoughtfully and tastefully decorated with a well equipped kitchen; the lack of a stove proved not to be a problem. The three bedroom house was one of three or four of various configurations, however we were not aware of our neighbors and enjoyed both privacy and quiet. The property itself was an amazing botanical garden of 300 species of palm trees. The champagne ponds and tidal pools are close by and well worth the visit.
I look forward to revisiting this special place.
