This was a very fun evening. First, from the info station we hiked to the top of a hill to watch the sunset. Seeing the sun dip below the clouds was really a special sight. It is cold and windy up there. You'll want a jacket and closed toed shoes. Then we walked back down to the visitor's station for the free star gazing program. Once it gets dark, they set up big telescopes and there are plenty of volunteers there to point things out. Definitely worth seeing.

Weather didn’t cooperate with us so it was impossible to do any kind of stargazing during our stay. We still wanted to visit because it is supposed to have good scientific information about the astronomy performed there.
There was not much to enjoy in the science department. Mostly, this is a 9000 ft gift shop. It is small and crowded (even during the day on a cloudy day). The highlight of the visit was the silver sword path.

We ended up not being able to continue past the visitors center. It was closed by the Rangers just after the center, due to ice/weather.

We had rented a 4 x 4 from Harpers by KOA airport. This is one the only places that will let you actually take your 4x legally on the trail up to the top.

But, we made the best of it!! The center is at about 9,400. There is an easy little hike up this hill just next to the center to about 10,000 with wonderful views above the clouds and picture opportunities.

A fun little hike while you acclimate or if you are iced out. No one else was took the opportunity.

We made the best of it and had a great time.

There are good videos here about Maunakea and the observatories on the mountain. Very informative and interesting. Not much else is here tho. It is basically a staging ground for those who plan to hike up to the summit. So there is lots of food and gear available for purchase. Not too expensive either, which is good for hikers. We had a nice drive up the road to the station. It was very foggy and rainy, and they had about 12" of snow at the summit, so they had closed the road pas the station and neither cars nor hikers were going any farther on this day.

Beautiful day, sunny no rain on the top of the mountain, good thing we had a Jeep, need four wheel drive. Going from sea level to 13,700 was a bit intense, altitude an issue for a couple of Oklahoma flat landers
