We went touring the island on a rainy day, which turned out to be a good use of time. The hike to Akaka Falls was beautiful yet easy, and the waterfall itself is majestic. There is another waterfall to see on the same walking loop, also pretty but not as much water flowing.

So many photo ops, I think this took our family about 60 minutes to walk the loop, but well worth the visit!

There are many beautiful sights on the Big Island but this one offered a quiet tranquility, even with all the visitors. It is a short trail to go to the fall (and a lot of stairs) but the view of the fall is breathtaking.
We parked in the parking ($5 admission) and got a spot right away but you can also park outside and pay $1 admission per adult.
The drive there is also interesting as you go through some old sugar plantation fields.
Highly recommended.

We stopped here on way to Umauma zip line experience. It’s an absolutely beautiful area, the falls are gorgeous! Hike is through rain forest but on paved path. I found it very easy & quick - do the whole circle path, it’s not that long. A few stairs on path. Early morning birds were chirping everywhere-just beautiful! On road in there’s at least 1 fruit vendor. Stopped in the last town before falls at the bakery & got some delicious local jams & jellies & cookies.
