The Occidental Hotel is a destination unto itself! The Discovery Channel just showed a program on it (11/2012). OK, I am in love with the place! I spent just short of a quarter century owning a chain of travel agencies and I never ran into any historic hotel like this – anywhere.

Never mind the town of Buffalo and Johnson County, (recall reading about the Johnson County Wars in 1892) being terrific, with fine, independently owned shops all along Main Street. Not to mention a half block down Main St. is one of the last full service, independently owned sporting goods shops in the USA. Then there are the magnificent Big Horn Mountains out the back door!

For the lover of the old west a drive of a thousand miles to stay in this world-class, antique hotel is well worth the trip!

The Occidental is a labor of love by the owner/manager, who works there every day. Sure the stairs squeak a bit, but you will too when your well over 132 years old. The furniture and furnishings are right out of the 19th Century old west. However, the bedding is modern, clean, and most comfortable.

Check out their extensive web site: http://www.occidentalwyoming.com/

View the wonderful rooms, the terrific old west bar, their five star restaurant, great old café, collections of wonderful quilts and clothing from the 19th Century. Visit the in house museum and the library.

Ok, to be perfectly honest it isn't everyone's cup of tea. If you are more comfortable in strictly modern hotels like a Hampton Inn or Four Seasons, and you never did enjoy going to your grand parents old homestead, you’d still be well advised to take a stroll through the Occidental. They welcome visitors and you are able to peek into any unoccupied rooms, visit the museum and library. The Virginian Restaurant is simply outstanding even if you just have tiome to take a look. It is surely a trip back in time to the days of Buffalo Bill Cody, Matt Dillon, Miss Kitty, Doc and Fester…

Note to Old Hotel Lovers: When you’ve enjoyed the Occidental continue your trip up to Cody, Wyoming and stay at Buffalo Bill’s Irma Hotel. Not as totally authentic as the “O”, but well worth your time.

We visited there with our friends for 2 nights and the hotel staff was so kind and accomodating. Both rooms were so awesome, decorated in the real thing. The real antiques were everywhere and information about them posed so you could learn about the history. The bar and food were good and the staff was great. The formal dining was a bit deceiving on the posted specials prices and a bit pricey to eat in there, however do go in and take a look because it is wonderful to see. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room with a clawfoot tub

This place is a treasure! Great service, wonderfully restored classic building, free wifi! The saloon features local live music and a country music jam once a week that varies from good to extraordinary. We saw Jalan Crossland there! Fantastic singer/song writer and performer!

Food is good, service even better. This is a first rate operation!
