We like to pop into Luna Coffee after parking at Voyageur Park on the west side of the river, walk up Broadway, cross the bridge and reward the walk with a mocha or cold brew. The mocha is a good balance between coffee and chocolate flavor. Too often, a coffee shop tips the flavor too far in one direction or the other. The cold brew is filtered through beans that are roasted by Luna in the back half of the storefront.
In addition to the drinks from a solid coffee menu, Luna serves fresh-baked bakery, bread and bagel sandwiches from a small kitchen in the back. Coffee beans are sold in bags in the store. When I am low on coffee beans, I will purchase a bag of “Good Dog” – a portion of the purchase price goes to the local animal shelter. The seasonal blend, “Reindeer Fuel”, is often an addition to our holiday baskets. And, Luna cooperates with a local brewery, Hinterland, to create to supply beans for the Luna Coffee Stout beer that is a dark homage to fermentability of the bean.
There are a couple of café tables out front during the season and many tables and comfy chairs inside. Two counters line the interior walls beneath a changing display of local art with plug-in power available. The shop is two blocks from St. Norbert College and attracts students, parents, alumni and college staff. For those not walking or biking in, there is usually parking in front of the shop or a little farther down the block.
Don’t be dismayed if the order line snakes all the way to the front door. Be patient, the baristas will work hard to get your order to you as quickly as possible. The cafeinated payoff will be worth the wait.
