Hillbrook was on our local trip list, and we finally made time over the Independence Day Holiday . Everything exceeded our expectations and we can't wait to return. The rural scenic property is immaculately maintained. The rooms are beautifully appointed and comfortable, with added amenities and treats. The daily breakfast was first rate and delicious. The location suited our quiet relaxation requirements. And we also enjoyed the wildlife sightings of deer, foxes and groundhogs.

In June we had, had our 35th anniversary and didn't get to do anything so we decided to do a quick trip to Harper's Ferry just to get away for a couple nights. We stayed in the Serenity Suite which I feel was kind of a mistake even thought we loved it. The reason we feel it was a mistake is because if you stay in the main building, you have access to soft drinks, snacks, and cookies. Every other bed and breakfast we have ever stayed at, you had drinks in your in room refrigerator and a snack was brought to your room. I would have given this place 5 stars but breakfast is by far the worst we've ever had at a bed and breakfast. And we've stayed at several bed and breakfasts as far away as Rome, Italy and always had a much better breakfast. I think my biggest complaint is not having some kind of bread. A muffin would have even been a little filling. And the main course could have had some seasoning. We had to load it down with salt and pepper to feel like it had something on it. As my husband says, it's a protein breakfast. As for the room, it was excellent. We loved the sauna. Squeaky bed but I had read all the other reviews on that, so it was no surprise. We hated the gravel road. We had just washed our car and everyone speeds through their and the dust goes everywhere. I hate to feel like I'm giving a bad review but of all the bed and breakfasts we've stayed at, this one was not my favorite.

Room Tip: probably stay in the main building

Thank you for giving us a 4-star rating! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed staying in our romantic Serenity suite, which is one of our most private rooms, and the sauna is a feature many of our guests love. We appreciate your feedback about the bed as well. We will have it looked into immediately and will make sure it receives monthly maintenance to ensure it is comfortable and quiet for all guests.

To address your concern about the snacks and beverages, these items are available for all guests at the main house, and you are welcome to take whatever you like back to your room. We can also deliver a gourmet cheese and charcuterie tray to your room upon arrival when requested in advance.

It saddens us to know that you had a disappointing experience at breakfast. Your anniversary is important and should be enjoyable, and we were disappointed to hear that it was not. That certainly was not our intention and we can only apologize for the experience. My husband and I recently hired a new Executive Chef that will be starting in the next few weeks. He will be working closely with the staff to make sure they maintain the quality other guests have mentioned in their reviews. I know that does not correct your experience in any way, but we want you to know that we are doing everything we can to make changes for the better. I will share your review with our culinary team as well because it is important that we look at these moments as constructive criticism to make us the best we can be. Thank you again for your honesty.

Sincerely,

My wife and I stayed at the inn for 2 nights. We were greeted by Mandy and given a mix of grapefruit juice, cranberry, and Prosecco. My wife is pregnant and she only had the juice. It was delicious. We even stopped at the store on the way home to make our own.

Mandy gave us a tour of the main house and showed us where breakfast would be served. We had many interactions with Mandy and she was amazing! We both cannot say enough about how welcoming and comfortable she made us feel.

We stayed the first night in the Sunset room in the farmhouse. The farmhouse is located about 2 miles from the main house. A family with a noisy 6 year old was staying below us. We mentioned this the next morning at breakfast and Marcy immediately found us a new room. Our new room was the Winter Cottage. It is a short 500 foot walk to the main house via the breakfast room. The Winter Cottage was very private and cozy.

We had the gourmet breakfast both mornings and it was amazing. Breakfast is included with your stay. It is confusing when you're handed a bill for breakfast. It is for the gratuity and it will not be on your final bill. The staff was very good about making sure everything was cooked to cater to my pregnant wife. We never had to ask.

We have stayed at other B&B in Virginia and I have to say the service, food, and staff blew them all out of the water. We will be back and will recommend Hillbrook Inn to all our family and friends.

As first time guests, our expectations were very much exceeded by this fine Inn and everyone who works here. We too concur with all the previous positive reviews which, candidly, drew us to this beautiful place. Indeed, we were not disappointed. We recently spent four relaxing nights in the Spring Cottage. Seeing the Main House for the first time after driving up the long, gravel driveway was very memorable. Although the history of the property is entwined with George Washington, the majority of the Main House was built in the 1920s by Gen. Frank Bamford who modeled Hillbrook after an Inn in Normandy. The Hillbrook Inn definitely has the decor and ambience of a European country Inn, without losing it's Americana heritage. While some may describe this as a B&B experience, I don't view it as such. It is closer to the European pension experience. It is elegant but not pretentious; comfortable but classy. There is great attention to detail and getting "things" just right. We saw this with housekeeping, and during breakfast and dinner. However, this is not a "stuffy" place obsessed with being perfect and meticulous. While definitely not rustic, some of the decor and furniture in the Main House exhibited "character." The grounds and landscaping are beautiful, but it's not a manicured English garden. We loved staying in the Spring Cottage. All the "cottages" (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter) are in one building set a few hundred feet south of the Main House. The east facing Spring Cottage is the only cottage where you can park directly in front of the Cottage door. The parking area for the other cottages entails a very short walk to the Cottage building. Our Spring Cottage room was splendid and candidly was better than the photos on the Inn website. Our Queen size bed was very comfortable; we loved the two swivel rocker club chairs; plenty of space; bathroom with spa tub and walkin shower was great. Nice decor, lighting, ceiling fans, fireplace, and Oriental rugs. The only negative inside the room was a lack of dresser/closet space for extended stays, and the bathroom vanity/mirror placement. For two people, four nights, we needed to keep our clothes in our suitcases. There is a small freestanding closet, but it's only good for hanging up a few articles of clothing. The bathroom sink/vanity is angled in a way that does not allow "normal" use of a bathroom mirror, i.e., looking directly straight to the mirror for shaving, applying makeup etc. Not sure how the other Cottage rooms are. Overall, minor nuisances in an otherwise comfortable sanctuary. The Cottage setting is very quiet and private. A pea-graveled path connects the Cottages to the Main House; a short ( and lighted) walk. Another nuisance with the Spring Cottage is that this pea-graveled path does not extend to the Spring Cottage; it stops at the Winter Cottage. While walking on grass (for just a few yards) to the Spring Cottage it may be an issue in selecting the proper shoes for dinner!! It certainly would be nice to have the walkway extended. The maintenance shed is located near the Spring and Winter Cottage. There was daily work activity necessitating access to the shed. It would be nice if an arborvitae wall or something similar was built around the shed. Each Cottage has a covered porch with two chairs. In my opinion, the view from the Spring and Summer Cottage are not remarkable (your car or cottage parking area). The winter and Fall cottages have the best views. The grounds located between the cottages and Main House is beautiful and includes a rolling lawn, mature trees, a fire pit and private patio with chairs, a horseshoe pit, tree swing, and hammock; it's a great space to chill, relax, and meander. The breakfast in the Main House was a treat. Stellar service in a beautiful setting (try to get a table in the sunroom). The two course breakfast is rich and filling; something different every day! We looked forward to being "wow'd" every morning with breakfast. Breakfast seating is at 8:30 or 9:45. The interior of the Main House is "very cool" and is loaded with character. It too is a nice place to linger. An outside chess set is located in the front of the Main House near a small creek. The Spa House is located along the driveway, a few minutes from the Main House. My wife and I enjoyed staying here and hope we can return for another visit.

My husband and I recently stayed here for 3 wonderful nights to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. We stayed in the Gatehouse building in the Tranquility Suite. The suite was very spacious, clean and cozy. The bathtub and shower were incredibly relaxing and the living room area was nice to lounge around. We didn't have dinner during our stay but we did have breakfast at the main house 2 mornings and then a continental breakfast in our suite before leaving on our last day. Each meal was delicious and you could tell was carefully prepared.

We also went on the 3 vineyard wine tour. "Aunt Becky" drove us to each vineyard where we were able to taste 6-7 wines at each location. We were also provided a cheese tray by the Inn that we chose to enjoy at the second vineyard while sitting outside enjoying the view. It was a wonderful experience that we enjoyed very much and the vineyards were beautiful.

All in all we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. It was clean, romantic, cozy, relaxing and we were well cared for during our stay.

We are looking forward to going back in the fall or winter and staying in one of the cottages.
