Almond Roca is the signature Sweet Taste of Tacoma and a must have treat to take back home. The outlet stores are especially affordable for those on a budget and want to bring back something special made in Tacoma.

First off, they no longer have the factory tours. Second, do not let that keep you away. A very friendly woman answered every question we had about the candy and the company. And she offered samples of everything we asked for, and oddly enough, bought about all we sampled. There were products we do not normally see in stores and wow it was great to find. I picked up a box of 24 Peanut Butter Mountain Bars for about $12 bucks, heaven. Great Northwest made products, and they still "Make them Dailey".

Any trip to Tacoma would not be complete without a stop at the Brown and Haley outlet store (there is also a store in Fife). Almond Roca and Mountain Bars are an institution in the northwest. The store is small (maybe 400 square feet), but does a have a large selection their products. Samples are available at the cash register. Open until 5:30 everyday except Sunday. We picked up some chocolate covered graham crackers that were heavenly.

the last 3yrs we've been at the Tacoma Dome for State wrestling tourment. This little gen is an easy walk just 2-3 blocks away. Every variety of Almond Roca you can imagine at HUGE discounts (75%) The also make mountain bars so it feels like you're a kid again.

We stopped in here just before closing on a Saturday afternoon and had only 15 minutes to browse. But that gave us plenty of time to make selections from this small, circular-shaped store outside the Brown & Haley factory. Initially, we thought the shop was inside the factory and were about to turn back after we saw a "closed" sign on the factory entrance. But then we spied the shop in the distance.

This place is a treasure trove of sweets, from Brown & Haley's signature Almond Roca to three flavors of Mountain bars. I even saw 10-pound chocolate bars ($25 each) stacked on one shelf. Prices for candy seemed to be comparable to or a bit less than what I've seen at other places. But the shop provides one-stop shopping for fans of Brown & Haley products and great deals on factory seconds. It is possible to save up to 50 percent on candy deemed unfit to sell elsewhere for reasons such as shape but not because of taste.

As soon as we entered the shop, an extremely pleasant woman behind the counter offered us free samples and invited us to keep tasting. I loved the Dark Roca and Cashew Roca.but decided to stop there to avoid sugar overload. She stood ready to answer questions and gave us information about the 103-year-old company.

I think this is a lovely place to buy candy gifts and worth a stop when in the Tacoma Dome District or nearby. But I see no reason to make a detour to come here.

When we visited, there was plenty of street parking in the area.

Thank Rumples
