“Interesting visit to see the history of our coastal defense”

Fort Columbia State Park
Ranked #1 of 2 things to do in Naselle
Attraction details
Reviewed 19 June 2017

Aside from a scenic setting above the Columbia River, this park exhibits the long history of the Fort's use as a coastal defense station. There are several different gun emplacements fromn different eras, with interpretive signs to explain what you're seeing. It provides a vivid glimpse into the history of the area.

Came across by accident driving from Long Beach to Astoria. We had no idea all this was behind the gate. Amazed at what we discovered. It was a rainy day and things were closed up so we mostly just drive through and walked a little but they have done a wonderful job preserving a restoring the history on this site. Look forward to visiting sometime in the summer

We enjoyed having the place mostly to ourselves with a self-guided walking tour. We wished we could have seen inside more buildings. The batteries were interesting and well signed. Fun to note there are guest houses available to rent for overnight stays. That would be a really interesting way to visit.

A great example of a pre-World War II coast artillery fort. There is a museum and many restored buildings. Some of the old officer's quarters are available for vacation rentals. The artillery batteries, of which there are several show the advances made over the years. There is an admission fee or a Discovery Pas can be used.

This is one of the best places to have fun that few know about. Much more than meets the eye...no matter the weather or time of year. The historical buildings and the military and native history is great. What a location.
