“Amazing trip- highlight of our family vacation”

Lopez Island Whale Watching by Outer Island Expeditions
Reviewed 21 June 2018 via mobile

Our Multi-generational family of 10 booked the Tritan for 3 hours. It was the highlight of our trip to Lopez. Our Captain Skye was fantastic. He shared his knowledge of the area, the wildlife, and made the trip such a pleasure. We had great sightings of a range of wildlife including some amazing time watching a pod of Orcas. The Boat was really comfortable, clean, and secure. There was a lot of space indoor and out. The glorious weather was a plus. Thank you Skye!

Benson was our Captain - and he made the day. As they knew we had small children, they used the larger boat with a large enclosed area. We saw a porpoise on our way, then a humpback that performed for us. The whale kept slapping its fin as if to say hello. On our return to Lopez Island, we stopped to look at the sealions and seals. There were so many of them.

I highly recommend this trip and this company.

We had been wanting to go whale watching out of Lopez for years but had one trip cancel on us, this time it was a go...we saw two humpback whales at first closer to the Washington San Juan's but then as we kept going out, which by the way, it was a nice day on the water, in a comfortable boat with plenty of chairs..knowledgeable captain and a sunny area you could step out for fresh air and better photos...ours had a bathroom (head) small though it was...I think about those other Zodiac type boats where people are out for hours without a potty break! Nightmare! We were allowed to bring snacks and drinks so that was nice! Anyway, we went into Canada or right near it chasing the whales, the captain was in communication with other boats of their fleet so they were following them and we motored over to the Orcas and though we stayed a respectful distance away, it was close enough to count them (six of them) - J pod he said. He also talked about Spieden Island (owner of Oakley glasses) owns this island but it was actor John Wayne who placed all the animals there in the first place and owned it originally. We looked for the animals on there ~ Muffalon sheep (35) and counted harbor seals all around it's shores (13) saw bald eagles also (7) It was neat how the captain was able to name all the small, uninhabited islands and knowledge of the area was impressive. We have been going to the San Juans for years, but made me feel like a newbie. It was a great time. Wonderful day out, even without seeing whales it would have been a great day!
