“Not up to 'resort' standard but still the best in Coral Bay”
Reviewed 18 May 2011

Reception staff were less than useful, expected us to sort things out rather than trying to help. Even though I explained I was photographing a wedding at the resort that weekend (which generally earns me a bit of extra effort in the customer service department) the girl at the desk wasn't pleasant, polite or helpful.
They desperately need a new uniform- ugly boring grey polo shirts with STAFF in big black letters across the back. Might be okay for cleaners but not restaurant and bar staff.
Doors were tricky in two different rooms we stayed in. The second was the worst, the latch was loose and had to be played with to lock and unlock. Balcony door in the first room didn't lock at all- did I mention I'm a photographer travelling with thousands of dollars worth of gear!!!
Sprinklers were going 24/7 even though it raining quite a bit during our stay. Admittedly its artisan water but it still felt unnecessary.
Hot water didn't last long, water pressure is iffy, artesian water so try not to drink it. One night the water stopped completely (contacted staff and was quickly fixed but phone number is hard to find)
Lots of towels, beds are comfortable.
Ants were out in the kitchen in our first room, apparently because of the rain.
Bedside table draw literally fell apart. Soap dish in the shower of the second room is wonky.
Supplied conditioning shampoo dries out hair and makes it tangle.
Pool looks great even though the weather didn’t allow us to use it, and why would you when the ocean is so close.
In conclusion, great location, not luxury, nice enough that I would recommend it if you got a good price but definitely needs work.

Room Tip: Garden view apartments look over the caravan park

Reading other people's reviews I think the issue people have with Ningaloo Reef Resort is expectation. This is not a 5* luxury resort that you would find in Thailand - but it is perfectly adequate nice accommodation - clean, functional (good kitchen facilities) friendly staff, a pool, but best and most importantly of all you are 50m yes 50M from THE BEST BEACH EVER.

Think pristine white sand, warm (30degrees) water teeming with brightly coloured fish, coral and sea life. If you want to relax and are not too snobby about the interior design of your room then I really think you won't be disappointed. As someone else said, this place is not for those who want to stay inside the resort but for those travellers who can't wait to explore the beautiful Ningaloo Reef. The fact that this is a shoreing reef means you can swim out 20m and find coral as good as the Great Barrier Reef!

Surely that has to make up for some 80s decor?? we thought so - absolutely loved it and would go there again in a heartbeat - was 5 days of pure relaxation!

Room Tip: Downstairs is better

We wanted our first break on holiday away from the kids and thought that we would pamper oursleves a bit with a week in WA. We booked Ningaloo Reef Resort the "Penthouse" apartment for 2 nights. Maybe our expectations were just too high. The Penthouse clearly means that you walk up a flight of stairs! the room was spacious but dirty. My husband had to clean the tops of the fan above the bed and both the air conditioners as when you turned them on you got sprayed with dust!! maybe the penthouse does not get booked very often. We thought that we had booked breakfast and to be honest considering the price of the room it should have been included, but it was not. We had on our trip stayed at a 5* hotel in Margaret River which was cheaper, included a full cooked breakfast and free cakes, fruit and port whenever you wanted it! and the place was heaven)The staff were unfirendly and pretty unhelpful when we enquired about diving and how the hotel operated, it was definately a case of harden up and find out yourself! Our room had a jacuzzi spa bath but it was a total waste of time, it was plastic did not look inviting at all and took about 2 hours to fill by which time you had given up and had a shower! Really would not go back to this hotel and would not recommend it either. Only issue is that if you really want to stay in Ningaloo Reef (the diving is pretty spectacular we saw reef sharks, manta rays and turtles) then this could be your best option! REALLY NOT GREAT

We arrived expecting very little and you know what? It's really not to bad! The rooms are dated and the place needs work, but you should be spending your time out fishing or reading a book on the beach, not sitting around the room.

The rooms remind me a 60's fibro cement holiday home, that was repainted in the 80's. The walls are butter yellow, and furnishings Aqua (remember when that was cool!) There is a kitchenette with a proper fridge, the air conditioning works a treat and there is a table and chairs outside for your evening drink.

I think the key is take away the idea that this is some sort of 5 star resort and focus on the natural beauty of the location.

All the best, Tim - Melbourne

Coral bay is a beautiful place to visit but the resort is just like a back packers but with a hefty price, the place is in need of a complete renovation, the rooms were old and it felt like I was back in a minesite room.
The staff were all freindly and helpful which was good and helped
Dont expect too much and then you will not be disapointed
