“good value hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2012

My wife and I and in-laws stayed here as part of a 'stay and cruise' holiday. We decided to do the 'stay' part first in case the hotel was a disappointment, but this proved not to be the case. My sister and brother-in-law were also with us - they had stayed in this hotel some years ago and said it has been significantly upgraded since.

For our part, it was refreshing for an all-inclusive not to have pizza or burger appear on the menu until about day 4 of the holiday! The buffet meals had a more limited choice than perhaps you might expect, but on the other hand, the food was of a very good standard, and plentiful. Drinks were brand name, and measures very generous. The hotel itself was very comfortable, although drawer space in the rooms was quite limited. Lots of sun beds, and no issues over these being 'booked and left' which was quite common at other places we have stayed.

What let it down was the daytime entertainment. Depending on which story you heard, the entertainment team had either walked out or been sacked en bloc just before we arrived, and one of the holidaymakers took it upon himself to organise daily quizzes and the like until the new team (two people) arrived. They took a couple of days to find their way around and get things running again. On the other hand, the evening entertainment, which had all been pre-booked, was of a very good standard and variety, and the venue was quite decent.

The hotel is literally two minutes walk from a beautiful white-sand beach, which was a joy to walk along. You could walk all the way into the port, although this is a fair distance. There isn't a lot in the way of shops or alternative eating places around the hotel itself, but we took taxis into the port area on a couple of occasions, including the Sunday market, and this was of the order of 7 - 8 euros each way, so with four of us (including a wheelchair) it was good value.

The reception staff when we were there were English, and very helpful. We were able to leave the wheelchair behind the reception area when we didn't need it, which saved taking it back and forth to the room.

For those of you who like internet access, be warned that there is only one PC in the public areas, and I couldn't find any WiFi access points.

Over the piece, we enjoyed our say at the Platja D'Or, and would be happy to stay there again in the future.

Room Tip: Room on the pool side face onto a busy road, but traffic noise did not turn out to be a problem. All...

My boyfriend and I stayed at the platja d'or from the 12th may - 19th may and have already booked to go back next year. Hotel is very clean and food is to a very high standard. We spent most of the week eating in the hotel altough we did eat out for dinner on a few occsions to see some different areas of the resort but we could of happily ate in the hotel all week as there was always a variety of food. The staff are very friendly especially the bar staff - pedro, paco and david who work extremley hard and alway's smile! My boyfriend and I were the youngest there in our 20's and early 30's but this suited us as we were there to relax not for a crazy night life holiday. There is a beautiful beach just across the road so we spent most our time there but we did lie by the pool which is lovely and a sun trap. We both cant wait for next year to return.

My wife and I have stayed at this hotel 4 times over the last 4 years,it has the best location on the beach in alcudia,a fantastic place. it used to be a thomsons gold untill it whent All Inc, It might be a bit standard, and you will get a bit fed up with the food on your second week, but the servis is good and so is the bar, nice pool and outside space, we will be returning soon in the near future, after we tride something diferent,it just was'nt the same,we heve allways had a great holliday at this hotel, I would recomend this hotel for a nice brake. Happy Hol's.

Room Tip: Try to get a beach veiw it gets abit noisy at the back.

Reading the most recent review, I am shocked at the attempts of some people to rubbish a fine hotel. OK it's not Al a Carte food, the rooms are basic (but air conditioned), the drinks flow freely and there is a relaxed atmosphere. I suggest if you want the finer 5 star things in life, you pay for it. We returned from this hotel mid April, and are returning at the end of June. It's a reasonable hotel for a reasonable price in a fantastic location, opposite the best beach and swimming on the island. Please don't be put off by others who believe they should pay very little and get 5 star value. This hotel is good, nothing less.

Took advantage of a heavily discounted late package, and found that cheap doesn't mean value for money. My eyes were caught by the 4T's given by Thomson, rather than the 3-stars the Spanish awarded it. I normally settle for good 4-stars, so that's probably the reason this didn't work for me.
The lobby is a desk in the middle of a run between the dining room and the bar, staffed with friendly receptionists, who unfortunately didn't give out any info, merely the room key. The lifts were suitable for 5 people, or one couple with bags, and quite slow - not a good start when a gaggle offload from a coach. The rooms are pokey, with about two feet spare from the end of the beds to the wall, no slot for your cases other than in the top of the wardrobe or under the beds, no effective drawer space - that's taken up by the blankets and pillows if your cases are on the top shelf. Wood panelling in the room lobby makes the room darker than it need be, while the walls are a simple stucco cream finish. The rooms either look over the pool area [and the busy dual carriageway just beyond] or the houses before the beach, with the added enjoyment of a new-build opposite the hotel entrance. The balcony is small, but adequate, with a table and chairs. The bathroom is a small bath with a flexible shower head in a bracket and a loo. The vent didn't seem to work very well, and the room smelled a bit whiffy while we were there. The hotel doesn't supply any shampoo or bath gel, so make sure you take your own. The soap is the next thing up from sheep fat the lanolin is so strong, so you may also want to take some soap too. It also doesn't offer pool towels, so you can either use towels from your room [in which case they don't get changed] or take your own.
The beds were singles, and comprised the usual Medi hotel form of [very] firm mattresses on a slatted base. The linen was thin and too small for the bed, with the result that sleep was often interrupted by creased bedclothes becoming too uncomfortable, that is if you could sleep on the unforgiving mattresses [AND not be woken by the dogs in the garden of the house on the beach].
I don't know what the other reviewers were eating, but in the week I was there, the food was not good, with what seemed to be tinned carrots [the small pappy tasteless things], broccoli that had been cooked into a puree, stringy green beans, sprouts that looked revolting, soups that had a film of grease hiding the pound of salt, puddings that were principally variations on blancmange, salads that didn't inspire confidence over their preparation, meats that ranged from leather to mush, and fish that was more often the colour of unwashed underwear. They managed to cook reasonable pies, but again salt was the primary taste.
The waiting staff were friendly, and reasonably efficient, but as it was all a case of DIY, they had merely to collect the empties.
The pool area was far too small for the number of guests, and, as it seemed a large majority smoked, avoiding cigarette smoke was almost impossible, as the perimeter was marked by a high fence with greenery, probably in an attempt to absorb some of the traffic noise from the road on the other side. The fence and the hotel acted as a wind break, and the area became really stuffy on hotter days. The pool was unheated, and while many said it was pleasant after the initial shock, it was more empty than not, and that in a hot few days at the end of May.
The place was generally kept clean, but a piece of paper on the floor by the toilet stayed there for the duration, and the liquid splatters on the phone weren't removed either. Crumbs and detritus on the window ledges in the dining room were cleaned off intermittently.
The bar staff worked tirelessly, and the drinks were generally quite decent. One thing that surprised me was that there were no checks on who was being served, so any outsider could just walk in, enjoy the hospitality and the poolside, and leave at the end of the day without being challenged. This is especially so as guests come and go every day.
The entertainment was much the same as many similar hotels. Some were good, others were paid to turn up. Daytime entertainment was on offer, but only a few seemed to take advantage of it.
The location just off the main beach was good, although it took something like 30 minutes to walk along the seashore to Alcudia. The beach was nice and sandy, as well as ideal for paddling along, with a very shallow sea for some distance - great for toddlers, especially as little fish were quite numerous. That's the bit I shall remember of the holiday.
While my view is that I would never darken this hotel's doors again, it is obvious that a good number of people think it is great, as many are regulars, some coming two or three times a year. I reckon this equates to a B&B in the West Country that is visited time after time, and becomes familiar and thus the hotel's offering is no longer scrutinised, merely that it's somewhere that is known, and not intimidating.

Room Tip: Pool view rooms suffer from traffic noise, front rooms have a limited sea view in most cases, left h...
