The Yeatman is a lovely hotel and I would look forward to staying there again in the future. If they tightened up their service to be 5 star across the board it would stand next to any of the best hotels we have ever stayed at. It’s not quite there for us - while the service was perfect in the vast majority of cases, it falls short of this standard in several others.

I’ll summarize first the good and great, followed by the things which were annoying given the price point and expectations.

The Good & The Great:

The hotel is beautiful, and is only surpassed in this regard by the views of the river and the city of Porto below. Rooms are spacious and clean. Common areas and restaurants are kept in perfect condition. Clearly much thought went into the décor and it shows. Sitting outside at Dick’s Bar at sunset is special.

The food is of high quality and there is good variety of dining options, from somewhat casual to formal. Dick’s is the most casual, followed by the very good Orangerie, followed by the amazing culinary experience that is the two-Michelin star The Restaurant. The latter was a top five meal of all time for us. Breakfast is good, with a large variety of options in the buffet, along with a menu for a la carte ordering.

The concierges are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable and responsive. We had many a great interaction with Pedro and Manuel who always delivered.

This is often billed as a wine hotel, and I think that is an apt description. There are several cellars on premises and a large by the glass menu available in parts of the hotel. We took a “MasterClass” with one of their somms, and this was the best wine tasting we’ve done. It is very personal, educational, and fun. We sat in one of the cellars and were guided through a Portuguese wine tasting experience by a very knowledgeable expert. These are intimate and private tastings, and as I understand it are typically arranged for parties as small as 1, and as large as 8.

There is a smoking lounge on one side of the main lobby, which is a feature obviously just about unheard of in 2018. It’s a beautiful room with books, maps, artwork and comfortable leather chairs. And given its ventilation system, it doesn’t really smell like smoke. If you don’t just like wine or cigars, but enjoy them both, it’s hard to beat what the Yeatman has to offer in both regards.

The pool is very comfortable with great views of the city. The water can be very cold, but once you’re in it you get used to it. There are plenty of umbrellas too, for those in need of shade.

Every front of house person we interacted with spoke fluent English, which is much appreciated. I’m sure partly as a result, the hotel does seem to get a relatively large number of English and U.S. visitors, and they feel right at home without having to try to butcher the lovely Portuguese language.

The Reasons the Yeatman Isn’t One of Our 5 Stars:

The service at Dick’s Bar is incredibly slow. Now, one doesn’t want to be rushed when taking in those views, but they should attempt to make things a little more efficient. Other guests around us noticed the same slowness, judging by comments we heard and reactions we observed. It seems they either need more waiters, or more full-time bartenders (it appeared at times that the waiters would also go behind the bar in order to mix drinks; I could be wrong about this but that’s what I thought we saw a couple of times – just seems inefficient if that is the case, or indeed a sign they could use more bartenders). There were multiple times when we were looking for our waiter and couldn’t find him for extended periods of time.

One night we were charged for a glass of wine despite using a free drink ticket we received at check-in. Not a huge deal as I’m positive it wasn’t done on purpose, and when we noticed the charge on the bill it was promptly removed. Just the type of thing that shouldn’t happen at a hotel of this reputation and another piece of evidence of the general disorganization of the bar.

In addition, we had a slightly off-putting experience with one of the waitresses / bartenders one night. They were somewhat rude or short-tempered to us regarding an insignificant disagreement / misunderstanding.

As another sign of being disorganized, an incorrect bill was brought to us when we were in a rush to leave one evening. We waited a long time for the bill, then had to wait some more when it was the wrong bill.

Away from the Bar, the changing room showers in the spa are terrible. We used the changing rooms on our final day, as we had a red eye and so checked out around noon, but stayed at the Hotel most of the afternoon. The showers operate with the push of a button, but the water only comes on for about 10 seconds, and it is scalding hot with no way to change the temperature (at least that I could readily observe).

The Kids Club is a nice idea but poorly executed. For example, missing puzzle pieces, missing chess pieces. It’s in a dark part of the hotel (no windows) and is unsupervised and seems like an after-thought.

It’s great having an ATM in the hotel but it did run out of cash one day.

Finally, we had 2 connecting rooms and it took forever to get the door connecting them unlocked. It also took a second request to have the crib we asked for finally delivered to our room.

Basically, almost all of the above critical points aren’t that big on a one-off basis. But when combined, and when one considers that at a Four Seasons, for example, I’ve never encountered any of these issues, it says to me that the Yeatman has room for improvement.

With all that said, the positives here do outweigh the negatives, by a meaningful margin. The vast majority of the people who work here are very warm and try incredibly hard. The hotel is beautiful, the food is tremendous, the city of Porto is a terrific backdrop. We’re really not difficult people, and so when we notice a bunch of annoyances over the period of a relatively short stay, that says something is missing from what would be a truly wondrous experience. Final conclusion is we enjoyed our stay, and I would be happy to give the Yeatman another try someday.

I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. The views are breathtaking. The rooms are large and well appointed and have large terraces. The Michelin two star restaurant is fabulous. No detail has been spared. The grounds are perfectly manicured and the staff is very efficient, friendly and attentive. The wine store has a huge inventory and a very knowledgeable attendant. Highly recommended, perhaps the fines Relais&Chateaux property I have visited.

What a beautiful place, high on a hill with a view of Porto that is incredible, especially in the golden glow of the sunset. We were here four nights in a quite spacious room with a terrace with lounge furniture. Unfortunately, it was so hot we weren’t able to sit out there during most of the day, but could enjoy the view. Comfortable room, comfortable bed, spacious bathroom, lots of storage. Interestingly, the rooms are named after winds and have bottles of them on a series of bookshelves on one of the walls, a cute touch. Only objection...there is an opening in the wall between the bathroom and bedroom over the tub. I’ve seen this in other places and don’t particularly like it. The shutters in the opening didn’t close well, thus the light and noise from the bathroom were intrusive especially for the spouse asleep.
We had dinner in the Michelin starred restaurant, which was a real treat. Not only was the dinner delicious, it was the detailed explanations of each dish, the meticulous preparation and service which made for an exceptional experience.

We spent one night here on our way back from a business meeting.
We were lucky enough to be able to check into our room early. It was clean, spacious and comfortable with great views.
The toiletries are Caudelie and very nice. Everything you need is provided.
We were also welcomed with a platter of fruit and cold meats, with a bottle of wine and port. Totally unexpected.
We didn’t have dinner in the restaurant instead we joined a wine party that evening which was great fun- delicious food and lots of different wines to taste.
We had to leave before breakfast was served so they brought us a full breakfast to our room at 6am. Great service.

Although this 5 star hotel had views there were a few shortfalls. Updating is needed as public spaces need some love example the carpets. The bathrooms have 0 lighting. The service was great. Shout out to Andre and Nuno. Terrible sewer smells in hallways.
