“beautiful view of nicaragua”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2012

The view was soooo beautiful. You also don't need to hike up the volcano. They can drive you for a fee. We wanted to go as cheap as possible. We decided to take a chicken bus from polle market in granada for 7 $C per person to guanacasta. Guanacasta is where mombacho volcano is located. From there we haggled with a motor taxi for 10 $C to the entrance of the park. Next, we paid $15 us dollars to get a ride up to the top of the volcano. Which i'm glad we did because we were low on water. Then we hitch hiked a ride to the bottom of the volcano where we got a little chicken bus for 15 $C each to granada. So all together we only spent $32.25 to get to and back from the volcano. Great deal and beautiful view. You must go

“Beautiful up in the cloud forest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2012

While in Granada, we took a taxi to the entrance of Valcun Mombacho. The "entry" is very basic and a bit run down, don't let that fool you. You pay a few dollars and wait for the bus (this turned out to be a very new 4 seater truck) to take you up the hill to a coffee plantation where you are encouraged to look around, us the facilities and purchase coffee if you like. Then we were up the mountain to the Park Headquarters where we arranged for a guide to take us on the shorter walk. While you can do this part of the walk alone, having a guide provided a lot of information and helped us see things we would have missed.

Take a jacket and make sure your hat is on tight. The views were spectacular on the day we were there. I understand that if it is really cloudy you won't see much. We had very nice weather and were able to look down on Granada and Lake Nicaragua. The vegetation is beautiful and the path well maintained. It can be a bit slippery so make sure you have good walking shoes and a walking stick if you need it for balance. This is not a W/C accessible activity.

The ride back was pleasant and when we heard the Howler's above in the trees the driver stopped and let us watch the monkey above us in the trees for a while. We walked from the initial entrance area to the main road and picked up the Chicken Bus back into town.

A lot of fun was had.

“A Soft-Core (& I mean that in the nicest way) Volcano Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2012

I've done my share of hard-core hiking, including volcanoes in Guatemala. Mombacho is accessible for folks who don't want to spend 8 hours (and expend every drop of energy) scaling steep mountains. I went with Tierra Tours, which sent a comfy van to my hotel to pick me up AND drives you up to where the volcano paths begin. There are well-placed wooden decks with jaw-dropping views of Lake Nicaragua, Granada, and a great expanse of landscapes. Mombacho is a cloud forest volcano with a great deal of biodiversity and even a couple (4, to be exact) plants and animals that are endemic to Mombacho). the whole experience -- from pick-up to drop off -- amounted to about four-and-a-half hours and would be appropriate for families with kids and nearly anyone who wants a moderate but unforgettable hike.

Go in the afternoon if you can! Very cloudy in the morning, and it was still great, but would have been a lot nicer if we could have seen some of the views
