“Macaroni and Cheese still cold!”
Reviewed 26 December 2010

After the waiter promised that the veggies (including the mac and cheese) would be definitely hot this time (I complained that the last two times it was cold) the macs arrived cold, not warm, not luke warm, but cold. That is the problem with Maya. Very disappointing.

“Excellent Food, Noisy Ambiance”
Reviewed 27 November 2010

We wound up at Maya by accident after dinner arrangements this evening fell through - and we came away feeling grateful for the confused circumstances at the other places.

First, the weaknesses. The restaurant appears to have two levels and we took a booth on the lower level where the bar is located. That increased the noise level a good deal and detracted from the overall dining experience - though it very well may be that upstairs might be quieter.

The service was competent but felt....strained. At one point we had to ask questions about two of the entrees we were considering of another waiter who came by to fill our water glasses.

But Maya's food tonight overwhelmed these weaknesses. We started by splitting a fois gras appetizer that was delicious - and all the more impressive for having been made on the premises.

My dining partner had a grilled pork loin with a coleslaw spiced with Carolina style BBG seasonings, along with macaroni and cheese and buttermilk biscuits. All were really terrific. The pork loin carried a subtle chili overtone that played well off the slaw but did not overwhelm and the macaroni and cheese had the great creaminess and toasted crispness that good mac and cheese needs.

I had the trout with caper butter along with collard greens and cornbread as sides. The trout was extremely well done - no bones, at all - something which I have not often found with trout. The fish itself was so tender it fell apart on my fork and had a smooth, smoky flavor from the capers. The greens were so well done they actually gave my grandmother's greens a run for their money. The one clashing note on my plate - they put sugar in their cornbread. Now I am not a purist like some in my family, but on this plate the sweeter bread undercut some of the sweetness of the trout and the flavor of the greens,

“Outstanding Restaurant-Maya”
Reviewed 29 October 2010

Despite the South American sounding name, this is a restaurant that specializes in local food. Obviously everything is fresh as a result. The decor is kind of eclectic and comfortable. We ate on the second floor which is away from the bar area and pretty quiet even though every table was occupied. We were not overfed-a good thing. We both had a local trout from a farm that was cooked so well, you could eat the skin! The sides are many but we chose bok choy cooked in butter and greens, which were well-prepared. My wife had mashed potatoes that were flavorful. There also are several craft beers to choose from.

Advertised as home cooking, although the decor was more trendy not homey. The barbeque ribs i got were melt in your mouth delicious.

“Great Atmosphere, Food, and Service!”
Reviewed 5 September 2010

We really enjoyed our evening at Maya. We sat at a booth in the bar area as it was a little too warm to sit outside on their lovely patio. We heard that there was also a dining room upstairs. The food was fresh, tasty, and interesting. The service was friendly and efficient. The lively atmosphere completed the evening for us.
