This is a charming little restaurant on the lovely downtown mall. I adore the vintage spiral staircase to take you to the lower level entrance. The welcome and service was personal and friendly/professional. Great ambiance.

However, we were a bit disappointed with the food. The heat level was great. Our waiter asked how hot we wanted our spice on a scale of 1-5. We each said 3 and that was a perfect amount of "fire." However, the wonderful savors and spices that we love in Indian cuisine were very toned down. Was this an accommodation for Americans who want bland food? The sauces were rich, which was great; colorful and filling which was also great, but we were sad there was little true flavor to the dishes. Even the garlic naan that was raved about was not highly seasoned.

Appreciated the value of the food in general, especially with our restaurant.com certificate, but because of the lack of true flavor, we won't be back. And I'm sad because it looked so promising.

This restaurant is located below grade level on the downtown mall, which means it may be overlooked by people walking by. But if you like Indian food, this is definitely worth a try. We had two chicken dishes, and asked for them to be "medium" spicy for one, and "medium hot" for the other. Surprisingly, we could tell the difference. The staff is very friendly. I think many are Nepalese. We came on a weeknight and it was near empty at first. Some people came by for takeout. Our serving sizes were large enough to take some home.

We went to eat at this restaurant on Christmas eve when most every other restaurant in Charlottesville was closed - so we were grateful to get out of the cold and enter the basement Indian restaurant. We were greeted by the smells of lovely Indian food. They were at the tail end of their buffet and were about to close when we showed up but they were very kind to let us know that whatever had run out on the buffet would be brought fresh from the kitchen to our table! The food was average in taste - I have eaten better Indian food but their great service and decent prices more than made up for the average tasting food. Plus we got to eat somewhere on that cold Christmas eve day.

We visited here for a work lunch. The food was decent, served buffet style. The staff, however, seemed annoyed that we were there. We were not greeted at the door and were stuck awkwardly in the doorway for several minutes. The restaurant was practically empty. A staff member finally greeted us and then walked to the back of the restaurant. The tables were not stable and half of our group was awkwardly seated on upholstered bench seats with far too many throw pillows. Our drink orders were taken but apparently not carefully. One member of our party who had ordered iced tea did not receive it, but did not say anything about it due to the general surliness of the waiter, who seemed visibly disappointed when we did not order alcohol, despite being a very obvious business group— we were all wearing our ID badges! Our check was brought quickly when everyone seemed to be done eating, and we received no further offers to refill drinks, etc. even though we stayed for a few minutes after paying the bill. This is, unfortunately, the only game in town for Indian food on the downtown mall, but it might be worthwhile to think about how much you really want to eat Indian food, as better dining experiences abound elsewhere on the mall. Would be 3 stars for the food, but the service knocks it down to 2.
