I truly enjoyed our visit to TJ's crib. From the gorgeous manicured lawns and flower beds, to the haunted slave quarters and the bedroom where TJ probably had his fling with Sally Hemings, Monticello is a true treat for the American history lover. Do the house tour! It was absolutely worth the wait. Robert, our guide, was so knowledgeable about the house, grounds, and Jefferson's life. Highlight of our trip!

PROS: beautiful mountain top mansion; amazing history, convenient shuttle, continually changing exhibits, the whole Monticello structure is just a testament to the genius of Jefferson. The shuttle ride only takes 3 minutes. Great young docent for the house tour. Great exhibits at the visitor center and video about Jefferson. Great selection of items in the Gift shop although they were lacking in baseball caps and shirts for men.

CONS : can be expensive as anyone older than 11 is priced as an adult ; very crowded any time of the week- there was a never ending supply of tour buses entering the parking lot. Underwhelming tomb in a cemetery that was locked. The slave tour was not captivating . Not much to see in the Garden tour right now as they had a cold spring .

I was taken back in time during my visit to Monticello. I certainly learned things about Jefferson that I didn't know previously and as the weather was good, the general area was extremely beautiful.

We really enjoyed this. There is more interesting history to the place than I expected. TJ did a lot of unusual things with the architecture, and many of the rooms are uniquely designed. The grounds are beautifully kept, and as authentic as they can make them to the time TJ was alive.

They are very aware of issues of slavery and freedom, and do talk about it with sensitivity to the subject.

The mountains in October are truly incredible.

Monticello has deep roots to American history and is a world heritage site and worth a visit...however I left feeling like they sugar coated and glossed over the slavery aspect. We did the walking tour of the enslaved people and our guide did a fine job of denouncing slavery and explaining Thomas Jefferson's contradictions. The house tour moved quickly and was interesting and the grounds were pretty. I think the entrance fee was appropriate for what you get --- it does take a fortune to run such a plantation. We spent 4 hours there and did everything there was--- Buy tickets on line to save a bit of money.
