We stayed at Fair Hill B&B because our usual place - the Middlebury Inn - was full. What luck! Fair Hill is an easy and scenic 10 minute drive out of Middlebury proper. The house is simply beautiful, built in the 1820s and with period interior features and lovely antiques and decor (and so many books!) collected locally and around the world. The rooms are charming and clean, with comforters and bedspreads, antique beds and dressers. We stayed in the room with the double bed and a shared bath, which was sparkling clean and pretty and only 10 steps (or less) down the hall.

Fleur and Russell are wonderful and so interesting, and even though we arrived late, just before 10:00 pm, we were invited into the living room for a very nice chat, tea, etc. before turning in. They've lived in this house for 40 years, and have a wealth of local knowledge to share!

The morning offered our first glimpse of the glorious setting of this B&B! They're set on a tiny rise in the valley , and the truly pastoral Vermont view of horses in meadows and farms, fields, trees -- and mountains! -- out the front and rear of the house are breathtaking. They have two wood stoves, and I can't wait to return in the winter to have that fabulous combination of snowy view and cozy warmth.

Breakfast is in their beautiful post and beam country kitchen, and consisted of coffee, juice, Irish cut oatmeal, bacon, waffles... We sat at their large farmhouse table with another couple (the only other guests) and Russell and Fleur, and enjoyed very much talking with everyone. (Please note: if you don't really like to visit with other people while you're on vacation, this may not be the place for you -- or maybe you can just skip breakfast).

One more thing: They have two cats (a handsome white male rescued from the streets of Shanghai and a round little black female who showed up one day and adopted them). Obviously this was a plus for us - making the B&B even more cozy, homey and comfortable.

This is now the first place we'll call when heading over to Middlebury -- and because there are only three guest rooms, I hesitated to post this glowing review for fear that it will become too popular! But honestly, it's hard to beat -- and for people who have always liked to stay in town so we can park once and walk everywhere - this is really saying something!

We stayed here for one very quiet and peaceful night recently. Some of the positive points:

--the owners were very warm and welcoming
--the location: 10 min drive to Middlebury, located in quiet area outside town
--room: the bed was as soft as a cloud, with a great comforter. It had a very authentic feel (real antiques and other touches, not at all froofy or tacky)
--breakfast was wonderful
--as they only have 3 rooms, you are likely to have a peaceful night.
--the house is historical and rustic

All in all, I highly recommend it.
