“Needs help - and the cigar smoke ... yuck!”
Reviewed 2 October 2009

Badly in need of updating (new mattresses, paint, carpet plumbing) and better house cleaning. And the shower is a little scary ... temperature fluctuates constantly from too cold to almost scalding ... you have to choke your way through the cigar smoke to register. Great price and location, but sometimes you get what you pay for ...

My friends and I decided only ten days before the trip that we were actually going to Killington for a weekend ski trip (and my first trip to Vermont). The organizer found Val Roc while doing some research, and after calling up, found out that it would only be $169 per night for the five of us--and we were going during President's Day weekend! So we quickly decided on Val Roc, and not expecting much since TripAdvisor reviews were mixed. However, we were pleasantly surprised--being that the motel was right on Route 4, it was about a two-minute drive to Killington Resort's Skyeship gondola and a five-minute drive to Bear Mountain. We had left after work on Friday night and got to Val Roc by 1:45, but the owners had taped a note to the office's door with our friend's last name and room number on it; yes, the room was left unlocked for us. There was a twin bed, a queen bed and a queen sofa bed, though the sofa bed caved in in the middle (and its blanket seemed to have a hairball on it), so one friend slept on the sofa's cushions on the floor and was comfortable enough. The room was cozy and warm. It has a fridge, a vanity, a coffee table and a rocking chair. The bathroom was good; there was facial and deodorant soap and a small bottle of shampoo, and only four sets of towels plus a coffeemaker we never used since a light breakfast was provided in the office--English muffins both days as well as some slices of cornbread and raisin bread on Saturday and bagels on Sunday, plus delicious coffee and Lipton tea. It did seem that breakfast wasn't ready until after 8, so for those wanting an early start on the slopes, that might be an issue. We weren't sure if our room would be attended to on Saturday, but did find our beds remade and our one garbage bin in the bathroom emptied (though there are bins scattered outside between the rooms). There is a hot tub behind the office, and when we went to use it Saturday evening at around 5, the owners told us we could have it at 5:15, but when we arrived at 5:15, two boys and their father were still in the tub, so the eight of us filled it up for around a half an hour; they didn't leave until well after two of our friends did, and by then another trio of two sons and a father came to join the three other friends. The owners were knowledgeable and friendly; they recommended the Back Behind Saloon, which was even closer to Val Roc than the gondola going east and where we waited an hour for a table of five but had a delicious dinner on Saturday night (Valentine's Day). I can't stress enough how conveniently located Val Roc is; on Saturday, my boyfriend and three friends skied while I snowshoed at Mountain Meadows (thanks to a recommendation from a Killington rep at Skyeship), located behind Base Camp Outfitters at Killington Road and Route 4. On Sunday, our three friends skied while my boyfriend and I took a nice 25-minute drive down Route 4 over to Woodstock to cross-country ski at the Woodstock Inn & Resort's Nordic Center before grabbing lunch on the way back to Killington at Long Trail Brewery, also on Route 4 in Bridgewater Corners. Overall, our Val Roc experience was a positive one, and especially for the amount we paid ($80 per person for both nights including taxes), it certainly exceeded our expectations.

this is a great location close to the gondola. the owners are very friendly and warm. the hot tub is a bonus. they have coffee makers and microwaves in room so it covers the basics. the price was great. it was a good, inexpensive, quite, accommodating place to stay. this is truly the best value in Killington. this means a lot when the economy is down and you still want to go ski and have a good time but not wanting to spend a ton of money to do so.

I stayed at Val Roc for MLK weekend 2008.

Room.

The room is spacious, features a den with small fridge, coffee maker and microwave. Linen and towels were clean. Mattress comfortable. Nice size TV worked fine.

Amenities.

Breakfast was very basic (frozen bagels and coffee) and served late if you want to head to the mountain early. However you have coffee maker in the room and complimentary coffee sets and a microwave oven; so best bet is to have breakfast in room.

Very nice outside hottub. It is right out of the lobby.

Wifi in the lobby and rooms close to lobby.

Location

It is very close to the gondola. Probably the best way to start and end the day at Killington, as it is the least crowded.

It is a bit far from the main apres ski area, a couple of miles. Not too bad given that it is in a main route that is well maintained. The closest restaurant is the Pasta Pot, good but a bit overpriced for basic Italian fare. Outback pizza in Killington Road is great pizza and fun. Our favorite, Heli's at Mendon Mountainview lodge, Best Snitzel this side of the Atlantic.

Service

Dan, the manager is very nice and goes out of his way to make your stay a good one. Reservation process was efficient and we got the room that we were promised.

In a few words, great value for location, clean and basic.

We paid more than the AAA rate, before we left we requested a refund and the owner's wife got very nasty. The room was hot, A/C not working, dirty and my family will never ever forgive me for taking them there. BEWARE
