We had a wonderful time with our guide Billy!!! It's the most beautiful landscape we saw so far... Billy explained everything to us from the geologic origins of monument valley to the traditions of the Navajos. He also sang traditional songs during the tour and took beautiful pictures of us during 1 hour and a half ! (You can see some of them below). The horses were very nice some of them for the experts and some for the beginners, we galop like in the western movies, it was just AMAZING.
We ll never forget our horse tour at monument valley with the best guide BILLY !
Thank you so much for everything and don't miss it. It's definitely worth the price

I advise against booking Roy Black's Hogan.

We booked Roy Black's Hogan six months ahead of time. Kids really excited.

However when we arrived we found the Hogan was full of ruck sacks belonging to other folk who had booked the Hogan for the same dates, but there was no one around to explain what was going on.

There was some twitching of the curtain in Roy Black's shack, which is behind the Hogan, and we wondered if there was someone in there frightened to come out and speak to us.

We decided to wait a while to find out what was going on. (Roy never turned up by the way)

Incredibly, while we were waiting another family turned up also with a reservation for the night.

So that's triple booked!!!?

The Hogan itself looked nice but the general surroundings not so much. And while we were waiting we had to put up with three small dogs running around fighting with each other and frightening my smallest child and loads of flies making it impossible to eat a sandwich.

In the end we were lucky that there were some nearby tents available for rent closer to the park entrance so we relocated there, and we had a nice evening with a campfire, sausages and and marshmallows.

I think the Hogan idea is generally a good one. They are very distinctive and it wound be a memorable experience.

It would also increase the amount of accommodation close to park and provide further revenue to the area. It's just a pity Roy's setup is so shambolic.

An explanation from Roy about what went wrong would have been nice but we never heard from him.

When booking anything like this I advise booking via a reputable intermediary such as Airbnb or VRBO so you have a better chance of getting your money back if it goes wrong.

My family did a one hour tour through the grassy spring and buttes with Billy and Hansen - it was incredible. To watch Billy especially ride a horse is to see someone supremely good at what they do, a rare thing. He is melded to the horse and is able to instruct you quickly and simply on how to ride. He and Hansen gave us closeup views of the buttes and the tidbits of knowledge that they impart about horses and the land, will never forget it.

We were joined up with other groups and despite some inconsiderate behavior from some people, our Navajo guides were always patient and up to the task.

Highly recommended.

We started our day with a great and unforgettable experience ! We rid 4 horses in the middle of the Navajo reservation with a wonderful guide named Billy. He lent his young and fabulous horse Oky to our experienced daughter and we had more traditional horses for the inexperienced. We used the John Wayne's trail and met with wild horses, listened to the flute in a cave and took great pictures alone in the park ! It was really wild and awesome ! We did some gallup and Billy explained us everything about the places we have been into. Should you go for a ride, ask for Billy !

We arrived at 11 and booked the tour from a little booth situated near the visitor center. We took the 2h tour.
We drove inside the park up to the stable and waited an hour for appropriate horses to be available. It is the only moment when we were a little worried because the guy there seemed quite unsure about how long it would take.
Everything afterwards was wonderfull : the guide named Billy, the horses, the lanscape, the pteroglyphs, the numerous explanations, the gallops...
Many thanks to Billy !
