Its free, next to the Convention Center. Park your car near the Whaling Wall.

If you are looking for the greatest number of birds encountered for each step taken you have to take this raised boardwalk trail outside the South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center just south of the SPI Convention Center. Binoculars are essential and scopes are useful.

For general outdoor recreation or casual birding, you can walk this in 30 - 45 minutes. Loaded with cameras, scopes and binoculars and bird books it took us almost 4 hours and included 45 minutes off the board walk in the back of the convention center studying shorebirds. I won't list all of the species that can be seen, but I added at least five new birds to my life list and got great new and close up views at a lot of familiar as well as rarely seen species. Check the http://www.spibirding.com/ website for times when bird walks are scheduled for additional support

The adjacent Birding and Nature Center includes a wonderful exhibit on the second floor that provides perspective on the geography and environmental history and is not to be missed. The 12 minute video shown periodically (when people show up) is a useful prelude to all your activities here as well.

The Laguna Madre Nature Trail is like an extension of the World Birding Center, but with the additional feature of a bird watching garden. It has been developed around the Convention Center where memorial trees, plantings, water feature and benches have been donated. Migrant warblers, other perching birds and butterflies frequent this shaded area which backs up to the marsh and fields between the Center and the shore. A boardwalk leads onto the marsh and down to a bird blind at water's edge. Having White Ibis land on the railing in front of us was a real treat! Park on the driveway circle at any time. Open to the public and restrooms are open on the side of the building.

Walked the nature trail on a sunny afternoon and enjoyed good views of many birds including pelican, herons, gulls and various shore birds.
