We paddled from the channel to the Lighthouse, took a left, and zigzagged along marked trails back to the channel. We we out there for 4 hours, and had to paddle almost the entire time to keep the boat from being swept away. Paddling against the high winds was VERY challenging for us.

Overall though, it was a great day. Lots of birds, including Great Blue Herons. Also lots of Mullet fish that were very entertaining jumping out of the water. Some almost jumped into the kayak! Sadly, did not see any dolphins in the channel.

There are a lot of really good places to kayak in Port A. The Lighthouse Lakes Trail is one of the most extensive, but is well marked, thanks to a young man and his Eagle project! You can meander through the many "lakes" on the trail where you will see tailing redfish, lots of birds and often other types of wildlife. The trail is the best way to get close to the Lydia Ann Lighthouse, as well.

Be careful...watch the tides. If you are way back in there when the tide starts going out, it can be tough heading back. Also, there is a pretty strong current crossing the channel to enter the trail. It's best to paddle upstream from where you want to end up to compensate for some drift from the current.

The kayaking trail is a unique way to get close to the lighthouse. It's fun to be on the water so close to all fish and birds. A one of a kind outdoor activity not to be missed while in the area. It's easy to rent kayaks or bring your own and launch them at the park. Just be careful of low tide, don't go then because the oyster beds are tough to paddle through.

Loads of schooling redfish in the inlets to the backbays. Be aware of tides, some of the trail is not readily passable at low tide

Wife and I kayaked here in the winter. It is shallow but no problem for kayak. There were lots of birds in the mangorves. The lighthouse in the name is private, can be seen but not visited as far as I know.
