Perfect family holiday

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 21 Jan 2020
We have just returned from our first trip to a Club Med hotel. Not our last though! Our previous Alpine favourite hotel was unavailable for the week we needed, so we bit the bullet and paid more for Club Med Serre Chevalier. Two us had skied in the area about twenty years ago and had forgotten how good it was. Sadly my ski-injured leg prevented my retracing the pistes but the rest of our family of adults, all experienced skiers, plus a toddler, had a great time. Taking everything included into consideration, lunches, drinks, ski pass, all of which normally tot up to a remarkably large amount, made Club Med worth every penny.

No one had had lessons for years, but as ESF guiding/instruction was included, naturally everyone participated. The excellent instruction was in English, mainly tips on improving technique. The big advantage was being taken all over the domain to all the best runs without having to stop to stare at piste maps. The most advanced of the family were impressed with the instructions on dealing with avalanches, with equipment provided, when they were taken off piste.

One suggestion - if you are hiring equipment, the hotel is very expensive indeed. We booked ours via Alpin Resorts, picked them up from their local shop 5 minutes away, where our ordered skis were ready when we arrived. Everyone was pleased with the quality of their equipment.

The rooms, ours were the standard sort, are not exactly luxurious but comfortable and larger than most we have found in the Alps and with huge quantities of storage space. Hot water, decent heating, not much of a view though. Marta looked after us admirably.

The food was stunning! So much variety and of such excellent quality. Our Vegan and our Veggie were delighted with the array of food they could confidently eat. The rest of us enjoyed all sorts, oysters, large prawns, beef carpaccio, tuna carpaccio. The raclette was a great treat especially when the kind server gave me extra crunchy bits.

The cakes and desserts were wonderful, the sort of stuff you see in French patisseries at vast expense. We expected the house wine in a French hotel to be good, and it was.

The ice cream and sorbet stall had a good choice of flavours and we admired the patience of the young man in charge when beleaguered by hordes of kids demanding complicated cones, with pleases and thank yous in very short supply.

It was very nice to be able to sit outside on both the bar and dining room terraces, drinking eating or both. Beautiful views, cheerful atmosphere and as our son said “if this was a restaurant on the piste it would be your favourite on the mountain.”

The extra touches, canapés in the bar before lunch and dinner, barbecues on the terrace, pancakes at teatime, were all much appreciated.

There was entertainment every evening by the staff. Don’t expect sophisticated shows such as on Cruise ship. However what the performances lack in West End glitz, the performers make up in enthusiasm and charm.

Our small grand son enjoyed the mini club and it provided welcome respite for his parents. Don’t forget that your child will need proof of vaccinations. One family with four kids had forgotten and were denied access and were last seen desperately trying to contact their doctor back in Russia.

I was amazed at the number of seemingly school age children tearing around unsupervised before dinner. We thought it would be French school holidays, but there were many guests from Brazil and Russia so that probably explains their presence. After all, it is a family hotel....

The bar staff, friendly and flexible, worked exceptionally hard to keep drinks flowing. Huge thanks to charming Carla for her ‘special’ espresso margaritas. Specially potent I think.

I had heard that Club Med is famous for its friendly staff, but was still amazed to encounter it in reality. Not a single grumpy response from any one, just smiling cheerfulness. I know the ‘leading lights’ of the GOs are often mentioned here but I would like to thank those in less conspicuous jobs, for example Mallaurie , Koula, Mustafa and Antoine in the restaurant and Anatolie, who seemed to work all hours, sweeping up every tiny bit of litter and perpetually cheerful and helpful.

The administration in every department was outstanding, from arrival and speedy check in, printing and delivery to the room of our boarding cards, the very prompt clearing of empty plates and glasses and the provision of breakfast at whatever ungodly hour you are leaving.

Aurore, wonderful Chef de Village, all our thanks to you and your amazing team for a fabulous family holiday!

After a chaotic start to the holiday we had a great week. Helped by perfect weather and great conditions.
Hopefully this review can help you decide if Club Med Serre-Chevalier is for you.....
    Positive
    * Food - lots of choice every mealtime. Catered well for different dietary preferences and children. Food of a great standard.
    * Large clean rooms.
    * Great location and overall ski area for intermediates (beginners who are unable to ski a small part of a red run will need to get one of the hotels frequent buses to and from the ski lift).
    * Friendly staff
    * Truly all-inclusive. We wouldn't have spent a euro the entire holiday except for ski badges (€8 each!!) and photos of the kids.

    Things to consider
    * No opportunity for children to eat before 7pm. Combine this with a 7:30 wake up each day there was little opportunity for them to get enough sleep (and the ski instructors then told us off because the kids were tired!)
    * babies are not taken outside by the childcare team. So their holiday is basically confined to the hotel.
    * The swimming pool temperature is cold but too small for swimming lengths
    * The younger children (<6) didn't enjoy the childcare.
    * It's a big hotel and if something goes wrong you may not get personalised service. E.g. Kids skis go missing and their default approach was to let a 6 year old miss their lesson despite a rental centre being in the hotel boot room.

Lucky with the weather for this skiing trip (great snow, full sun), I have also been amazed by the incredible GO team of this Club !

Because that is where I spent most of my time, I am gonna start to great the bar team, Steph (I need your "père fouettard" recipe), Anna, Carla, Baptiste, Manuel, Pierre, Salih and all the others that I forget.

Along this line, I cant forget the smile of Victoria, who always gave us great wine advise ;)

One has also to aknowledge the harder workers of all, Cédric, Jules and Germain .. ^^

For their patience and care with the kids (and me), thanks To Steven, Benoît, Gayene and co ...

Also, for their great and empathic conducting skills, à big thanks To Ulysse and the chief of the village.

Finally my big crush go to the music band whome smooth melodies was perfect to start the apero ;)

I probably forget some of you but please, remember that you are all amazings.

Now back to work, full of good vibes and great memories ;)

    See you soon,

    Vincent !

Overall we were very happy with the club med experience and if I hadn't of been travelling with a 6 month old I would have no complaints. BUT
I have been on many ski holidays with my other 2 babies and childcare staff have always been English and I didn't appreciate the importance of this. Childcare staff had very basic English so I struggled to communicate the routine that should be followed and most days I had no idea what she had done/drunk/eaten in the day. She hated the jarred baby food on offer which has not previously been a problem at home so can only assume poor quality so was living off yoghurts. There was no suitable baby food at breakfast so had to give her porridge which is obviously cows milk which she hadn't had before and even now still has an upset stomach. Most importantly there are no kettles anywhere! When I asked childcare staff how I could boil water to prepare formula I was told i couldn't! Appreciate french guidelines may be different but really!!?? So bottles were made with bottled water and warmed slightly with a bottle warmer....not ideal and I am thankful she was 6 months and not younger. AND make sure you take details of vaccines....I only took red book just in case as I had seen something in other reviews but it's a must, and you have to see a doctor, but there is on on site which is free. I dont think this is made very clear when booking. However otherwise very impressed. We travelled with a 3 and 5 year old also and although the language barrier was still problematic at least they are older do could tell us about problems so we could help resolve.

ClubMed Serre Chevalier was 17 years our first ClubMed experience during the New Years week. Since we have visited many ClubMeds in Europe, both summer and winter villages.
We returned 17 years later to Serre Chevalier and it was great to see that the same ClubMed experience still resides in Serre Chevalier. The building has aged over the years, yet the rooms are comfortable with good showers and ample space to hang clothes etc.
The food was phenomenal; where can you eat oysters, coquille st Jacques, foie gras, salmon, raclette, all of very good quality, as much as you like! The deserts and cheeses were divine and luckily we had a week with great snow so we could burn all the plenty calories we had eaten on the slopes. As with other French villages the resorts tend to be a little more French oriented, with more French visitors than in Italy or in Switzerland for example, which meant the kids didn’t really participate in juniors club, yet they both loved their competition ski class and were very happy with the instructor Silvie, and we enjoyed our week with Herve too! Fitness Chris was great for stretching and some yoga after skiing and especially the winter show evening was phenomenal. Great DJ!
