'Shabby Sh**e' be careful....

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Mar 2015
A lovely location in a great village however du Bez has seen better days. It retains charm however this is now wearing very thin. The hotel needs investment to just bring up to a clean, serviceable condition. The food and restaurant are good however restricted. We got impression they had ideas above their abilities and not really any choice, everything controlled by the hotel, where you sit/what you have to eat and that includes kids. Shower room a joke, toilet smelt all week due to loose connection !
The pictures really tell the story and give you the idea! I'm trying to be diplomatic but the reality is this hotel needs sorting big time!

Dear John,
We are very sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your stay here with us. We try our best to make up for the old building with good food, friendly service and a very reasonable price for the location. Most guest seem to think we succeed in our aim of creating a real ”skier’s lodge”; nice and relaxed atmosphere that trumps the scruffy edges. After all, we do provide a budget alternative in a great location for keen skiers who also enjoy good food. Sitting together in the dining room as we do at Maison du Bez may not be for everyone, but it is an integral part of the experience that the majority of our guest love about us.

However, we could not agree more with some of your points: the building is old, the bathrooms are small and we could do with a facelift. Though many of our returning guests actually prefer personal ambiance and ”scruffy edges” to considerably higher prices. As you write in your review, the pictures on the website really give you an idea of what to expect, and if this is not what you are looking for, it is advisable to chose a different place to stay.

We are not entirely sure what you mean by us having ”ideas above our abilities and not really any choice, everything controlled by the hotel”, other than that we do have a set menu, and that all guests are seated next to each other in the dining room. Had you mentioned to us at the time that you would like to be seated elsewhere than proposed by us, we would have been happy to arrange this for you. In general, we recommend you for your own benefit to voice your concern directly at the hotel at the time of your stay, so the staff can attempt to help you have a more enjoyable stay.

We wish you luck in finding a ski hotel that better corresponds to your preferences for your next holiday. If you liked Serre Chevalier as a resort, we could recommend the Grand Aigle Spa Hotel or the Roc Noir Boutique Hotel. Both are brand new and more traditional luxury hotels.

Best regards,
Anna-Karin, Tina and the Bez-team

We stayed here in September, at the beginning of the off-season, and were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves!

Tina was the perfect host - friendly, knowledgeable about the area, and incredibly helpful. She went above and beyond the call of duty and drove us to the top of the valley so that we could hike back, and driving us into town when the bus didn't arrive.

The room itself was bright, clean and cosy (but not too small), with amazing views of the mountains.

Breakfast was great - given that we were the only two guests, Tina still made sure that we had a wide range of cereals, fruit, cold meets, cheeses and breads every day.

The only downside was the fact that we were only there for three nights - I'll definitely be returning there for longer!

We stayed as a family of 6 in the largest apartment. We skied here in Feb half term and have only just got around to writing the review. The hotel is extremely characterful and the apartments are exactly the same, full of everything you need to make your stay homely. Tina and AK were the best hosts, never in your face but there if you needed anything and it seriously is ski in ski out, literally click into your skis at the door and off to the lift. I would stay here is we skied Serre Chevalier again. The area is massive and not too busy outside of peak weeks. We booked a local chef for the week but the hotel is fantastic for food also. Lovely pizzeria just on the corner near the apartment.

Stayed here with a group of 30 friends in January and loved it. The hotel has so much character, located as it is in a 17th century village. Not really in the heart of the action so better for those looking for a more peaceful holiday. Getting to the local bars & restaurants is only a 10-15 min walk though.
The communal areas are lovely, fitted out with wooden benches & cushions, a fire in the lounge, a small honesty bar (top tip, get one of the staff to demonstrate how to pour the beer or you'll end up with a glass full of foam).
The food was superb, breakfasts were quite standard fair: meats, cheeses, eggs, cereals and toast but the evening menu was restaurant class. We even had friends staying down in the village come up to eat with us at our hotel several nights!
I was in a triple with two friends which was quite spacious but being an old building all the rooms are all different shapes & sizes, so some were definitely more snug. You also have to bear with the fact that the plumbing system is that of an older building. We always had hot water but the temperature was variable during a shower depending on how many people were using it and the bathrooms being built into the rooms were also quite compact but did the job. The heating however was very powerful and we had to make sure that we turned the radiator down at night so as not to overheat.
The Swedish owner & staff were simply lovely and very accommodating. They always wanted to know how our day on the slopes had been and genuinely made their guests feel at home.
One thing to note is that while you can ski in & ski out, it is a bit tricky and definitely not for beginners. There is a red run that was incredibly busy at the end of the afternoons that takes you back to the resort (there is also a very, very long green route back too) and then a little track (not obvious) off it back to the hotel that takes some negotiation, though wiping out on it is an option if you're not that experienced at such things as we found out! There is access to the slopes also via a short walk or the free village bus.
Ski domain is great, with 250km of runs it kept everyone happy from the beginners to the off-piste group.
Friends have also stayed here in the summer for hiking in the area, so it is an equally good base for summer activity holidays.

This is a value for money hotel, with great atomsphere, service minded staff and dinner in the evening of top class. A perfect combination of hotel and you own cottage. No doubt, this will be our choice next time we come back to Serre Chevalier. Thanks to Tina and her great staff!

We spent a big family Christmas in one of the Maison du Bez - apartments last Christmas. We had a fantastic week and will certainly come back this year ! Althoug the apartments are independent of the Hotel, we often went to the hotel for dinner and sit in the lounge-area. The food is excellent, I still dream of the marinated herring, the lounge is very cosy with its open fire. The hotel seems to be a hangout for keen skiers, staff included and the location is clearly one of the hotels main assets. I don´t ski myself, due to "old" age, so instead I spent the days with our toddler grandkids. One of them went to ski-club just down the road. The Hotel is not upmarket like the flats are, but it certainly has lots of character and plenty of personal ambience.
