Molina's Mexican Restaurant
Ranked #1,274 of 8,661 Restaurants in Houston
Description: Raul Molina arrived in Houston from his hometown of Laredo, Mexico, in the 1920s. Like many of his contemporaries, he was searching for a better life and found work in a local restaurant as a busboy, dishwasher and counterman. In 1941 Raul and wife Mary opened their first Mexican restaurant, the Old Monterrey, located in Houston at 1919 W. Gray. At the time there were only four or five Mexican restaurants in the City of Houston. Today, Raul Molina is considered a pioneer in Tex-Mex cuisine and is known as the patriarch of a food family. Nearly eight decades later, Molina’s Cantina is recognized as the oldest and one of the best locally owned and operated Tex-Mex restaurants in Houston. The Molina family has played a significant role in shaping Houston’s culinary landscape and continues to enjoy the privilege of growing with the community. Whether a third-generation customer or a first-time visitor, we welcome you to the Molina familia. Come, eat, and enjoy a Houston tradition.

I was here for a business lunch. The service was good. It was unobtrusive even as we were slow to order. The food came out fast. I had a lunch special with 5 items. I really just wanted a tamale. It was very good. I loved the chili con carne. The prices were reasonable.

The place is filthy , needs remodeling. Poor service, stale chips. Taco's are store bought shells and canned food.

I have had eaten at this location since i was a boy, Since the Original Owner died, the younger generation has since run this into the ground. I would recommend eating at other better places.

We were in Houston for the first time and the concierge at our hotel recommended this restaurant. It was delicious and the service was very good. I am a carnitas fan and their offering was great. The margarita was very good.

We ate there last evening. Service was very slow, my food was cold and when I went to wipe off the table for my grandsons it was filthy. The tops of chairs were black. I was totally disgusted and will not go back.

Great stuffed rellenos, burritos, carne asada and sopapillas. Excellent service and very tasty salsas.

Really enjoyed the meal. On a busy Friday they were up to it.
