Much of the central business district is connected by pedestrian tunnels, which are interesting. But they are particularly appreciated if the weather is bad. Note that using the tunnels is not always the shortest distance.

After living in Houston for 68 years and hearing about the tunnels, my son in law finally took me down there! He got a map of the underground tunnel system online. Gotta do it during business hours, 8-5 between Mon-Fri because the tunnels are mainly for business people to walk from tower to tower without getting into the humid Houston weather in suits and ties. We had a totally different spin on it though!

Make sure to check out the Pennzoil Place lobby and the JP Morgan Chase lobby!

I went through the tunnels with one of my friends for something to do during a hot day/short visit. The tunnels are fully air-conditioned and there are plenty of cafes and mini restaurants/takeaways in there. Free wifi in certain places too. At the very least it beats walking on the streets and melting during summer! Just note that the tunnels are only open on work days for the CBD (Monday to Friday excluding public holidays). Worth a visit though! Would like to see some more shopping maybe open up in the vacant areas.

This tunnels are located in downtown and they’re very famous, below there are a lot of restaurants you can eat, but only at lunch hours after, it’s pretty empty, but you can walk and get to some places.

Whilst I understand it is used locally to escape the heat I used it to escape the rain. With the aid of a tourist map one is able to navigate around downtown making the most of the tunnel network.
The tunnels are busy during the day with restaurants, food courts, barbers, beauty saloons and countless shops all vying for business, hidden beneath the city. As 5.00 pm approaches business dies away and I assume the network is closed for the night shortly after.
