Some people will argue that this is the best Japanese restaurant on the Island, and until 2011 it was the only Japanese restaurant on the Island. They do have Sushi but not like you'll find on the mainland. Still, if you just have to have your fix of raw fish this place is as good as any on the Island.

I had heard good things about the bento box lunches at Yamato's and decided to check them out for lunch today. The restaurant is located in a little shopping center with a decent-sized parking lot in front (more easily accessed by heading north on 61st street, rather than crossing over this usually-busy thoroughfare). You enter the black mirrored doors that lead directly into the dimly lit interior. There are several dining areas, but the immediate area was only open for lunch today. There is a large, private area for groups which looked inviting and a larger dining area in the rear with seating around hibachi setups. In the first dining area, they have a chef preparing food and you can sit at the bar and watch him, or take one of the waist-high, glass-topped tables. They have nice ambiance, except for a TV on mute, which is strange in a classier place like this, but not terribly distracting. They have soft music playing in the background. And they take Discover!

The food was tasty. For $10.77 (including tax) I got onion soup (came out as an appetizer) and a bento box of teriyaki chicken (and mushrooms) with perfectly sticky steamed rice, a california roll, two mini egg rolls, a few fresh pea pods, slice of orange, wasabi and ginger. Service was quite fast and other than a few minutes to get my soup, I never waited on food or had my glass go empty.

I would have preferred a bit more food for the money, but left feeling pleased overall. However, I was wearing some grungier clothes, coming from work, and felt a bit out of place as most of the other people were in ties and otherwise dressed up. Be aware of that. I was also not crazy about the tall tables and chairs, which were not particularly comfortable. And for those of you who like to text under the table, the glass-topped tables won't let you do it on the sly.

Overall, good experience to which I'd return, but I'd dress up a bit more.

We have eaten at this place ever since my son was a baby sitting in a high chair. We continue to go there for special events like birthdays and anniversaries. We usually have the salad with ginger dressing, miso soup, and then grilled steak and chicken with fried rice. They also have lots of folks who love the sushi bar. Weekends may be hard to get into due to being so busy! It's well worth the wait. A very gracious local family works very hard to keep this place running smoothly.

Friendly family. Crowded, but food was good. Priced average for what you got.

Food very fresh cooked in front of you. It's a show too, watching them cook. For an appetizer, I recommend the vegetable tempura.
