The room was fine and all features worked (tea/coffee and bar fridge is comunial), The property has a number of different common areas to relax in, the inner courtyard was great in the evenings as the air began to chill and is protected from any breeze. Only ate breakfast there and that was fine. Staff were wonderful,
This is an old, well maintained 1920's property with narrow steeper pitched staircase, which could be an issue for some people.
Any Complaints...... The hot water was running out in the morning on us,........ But we should of just got up a bit earlier to enjoy the ambience of this property and the Bellarine in general.

Room Tip: Staircase would be an issue for the less ambiant

Loved this little 1920a style town and b&b. Very quaint with great balcony off the rooms. Oysters at restaurant were the best I've ever had as well! Take ferry from Sorrento or vice versa (you can pay extra to take car on ferry as well)

We chose Athelstane on the basis of its No 1 rating among Queenscliff B&Bs and also had high expectations due to the prices. It has been very well renovated and offers many opportunities for relaxation and dining. Service is very attentive. The food was very good.

But now for the disappointments, small but irritating. The room (not the cheapest) was compact but not organised in a way which made best use of the space. It contained some very small tables which looked arty but offered little in the way of places to actually put stuff, when there was probably space to fit in larger tables. We ended up putting more stuff on the chairs and the floor than what we would have liked. There is arguably room to include a small fridge in many rooms rather than having the tea, coffee, kettle etc in the cabinet on the landing. The bathroom would be a good size if not for the spa, which with its large footprint and unrelaxing jet engine is a mistake. The water saving shower is also dissatisfying.

Hi Bruceoz14,
Thank you for your review of Athelstane House. We are glad to hear you enjoyed our dining options and the property overall.
Some of our rooms have one or two magazine/coffee tables, we find this is sufficient for the majority of our guests. For guests who would like a larger table we suggest the King Room or the Large Standard Room, both of which have large fold out tables suitable for dining or extra storage space if you have additional luggage etc.
As we are a B&B we have chosen to forgo refrigerators in the rooms, however if you wish to have tea and coffee in your room there is a tea tray available from reception as outlined in the compendium.
After purchasing Athelstane House 12 months ago, our first port of call was to install the split system air-conditioning units, in the future we would like to explore upgrading the spa baths to showers, thank you for your feedback on this.
Once again, thank you for your great review, we look forward to hosting you again in the near future.
Kind regards, Laurel

We have had several New Year stays at Athelstane and the standard only gets better. The attention to detail and maintenance is excellent and the staff are just lovely; friendly and obliging. Breakfast in the simply but elegantly furnished dining room is always good. We had the apartment for the second time and it was pleasing to see that it has been well maintained and possibly updated with air-con and ceiling fans since our last tenure a few years ago. Well done Athelstane and we look forward to many more visits.

Room Tip: It's an old building so the sensible traveller will always have sleeping mask and earplugs.

The hotel is an older style Guesthouse that has recently been refurbished with each room having its own ensuite bathroom with a spa bath. The room we stayed in was the smallest but very comfortable. A really enjoyable stay with nice hosts.

Room Tip: A balcony room could be a good option as these are larger.
