Hidden down an alley off the main drag was this little find.

All the usual cafe fare with some good Japanese options.

Quite a few fermented options too if that's your thing.,

good coffee.

We chose this restaurant for lunch because its website claims to serve healthy and quality food. We were disappointed. The biggest let down was their corn fritters. It came out burnt on both sides (not very healthy!) and was bitter. We were starving after a three hours drive so ate most of it before deciding we couldn't eat it anymore. When we informed the waiter, his immediate response without even glancing at our uneaten fritters was "it is meant to be like that. Cripsy on the outside" "But this is very burnt and it is bitter..." I started and was quickly cut off with "OK. I will tell the chef. Thanks" as he quickly cleared the table and left. We felt the response was a brush off rather than genuine acknowledgement of feedback for improvement. The two fritters served were one corn thick and the size of a palm. At $18 a dish we would expect that if it was burnt charcoal on both sides, it should not have been served.

This cafe really is a surprise package for the town of Healesville. Friday nights at Alchemy are filled with a fantastic vibe, great service and amazing food. The sushi/sashimi platter showcased generous cuts of the freshest fish with lovely fresh accompaniments like sunomono salad and crisp daikon. The beef tataki was also incredibly tasty and a yummy little gyoza morsel didn't disappoint! The night crew led by Brent provide fab service. Thanks again for a special night!

Ok...some people may thing a steak is a steak and that any old place will do. Well, I'm here to tell you that these guys are cookin' up some serious meats on Saturday nights! A sirloin and a flank steak cooked to perfection--one with jus and one with salsa verde--perfectly medium rare with just enough chargrill for that special outer crisp with a fresh, tangy salad. They've teamed up with the local butcher from The Beef Joint and it was absolutely divine. Thanks for such adding such a great point of difference for weekend dinners in Healesville. Now maybe add a little jazz and to pull 'em in!
