Booked at 1 hour's notice, we found this an ideal spot for a short stop in the Grampians. Room very comfortable, food well cooked, and location splendid - quiet, with plenty of birdlife and kangaroos around.

Staff were extremely helpful, particularly when we discovered that we had left a coat behind when we checked out.

In short, highly recommended!

A lovely Guest House with nice architectural features nestled in the Halls Gap Valley. Rooms spotlessly clean, good beds with plenty of fluffy, soft pillows, excellent heating/cooling. WONDERFUL dinner menu, standard but adequte breakfast menu. Don, your host, is a treasure - extremely helpful to me in a difficult situation (car breakdown) organising RACV visit while I was elsewhere occuppied - and even going out of his way to arrange for towing, spare parts, transportation and additional accomodation. Much appreciated! You won't get that sort of service in a standard motel.
However, if you are looking for a room with wide screen HD tv with 50 channels in your room, room service, mini bar, concierge to meet you at the door - then go to the tacky 5star motel down the road. The rooms have no TV, phone or wifi connection - to me that is heaven, but others may find it difficult to cope with that concept.
What the Mountain Grand offers is a completely different experience. It is Guest House, a home away from home. You can sit in one of the 3 cosy lounge rooms, drink a wine and watch the TV - or even talk with the other guests! If the sounds of birds in the morning or possums running across the roof at night worry then I do recommend you bring earplugs - rooms are fairly quiet, but sounds do become magnified in the country!
When you arrive, ring the bell at the front and Don will come greet you and let you in - but be aware this is a large building and Don may need to take a few minutes to arrive from another part of the building. Why not consider calling ahead and letting Don know your approximate arrival time like I did - then there is little difficulty.
I would recommend the Mountain Grand to my friends as a warm, friendly guest house that has wonderful character. A very relaxing place to stay with helpful staff and a host who will go out of his way to help you.

The email when we booked was friendly and welcoming. The overall impression when we drove up was that the place desparately needs some improvement. The balcony was littered with leaves and cobwebs and the place needs a coat of paint. When we arrived at the front door all the doors were all locked and we had to wait for some time before the door was answered. The welcome was understated to say the least. The hotel was full of handwritten notices stating don't so this and don't do that. They could all have been printed on a PC and written in a positive way. The room itself has seen better days and was very shabby - it desparately needs some money spent on it. It was clean but in poor condition. You don't get any maid service and have to make your own beds etc. We had resisted paying for half-board in advance but decided to eat there the first night. You can't choose a time to eat and the dining room was almost empty. The food was actually very good - good choice and well cooked. The atmosphere was dire. Service was OK but because it was so quiet the one member of staff spent most of her time setting up for breakfast the next morning. The next night we had dinner in the Kookabuura Restaurant across the road which was really good, lively, friendly and good food. We don't think anyone had dinner the second night we were there. Breakfast was poor. Only canned fruit and you are enouraged to order a cooked breakfast - but this costs more and is not included in the B&B rate - something which is not drawn to your attention. Overall this place has potential but needs a good clean round the buildings and some serious money spent on it to refurbish the bedrooms. They need to do more to attract non-guests in to eat to aviod the funeral parlour atmosphere.

We have just returned from three days at Mountain Grand, and can only believe the negative mis-spellers have a hidden agenda!! It is a Guest House, not a Motel..perhaps
they are conditioned to robotic 'chains'. Our room was spotless, comfortable, and warm.
We were never made to feel we had to eat breakfast or dinner at any special time.
Breakfast was advertised as 'included Continental' - we knew if we wanted cooked it would be extra, but the variety of breads for toasts was fine, raisin loaf, seeded, wholemeal or white....plus fruits. O.k. cereal, jams etc. were of the packet variety, but
so they are at most places. Dinner was superb, enormous variety, freshly cooked
and piping hot, and possibly the tenderest steak we have had for ages, included in the very reasonable price. Can't wait to go again. J and H Dunn

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This is one of country Victoria’s last remaining traditional Guesthouses, now refurbished into a very comfortable small hotel in the heart of Halls Gap. With its balconies and unique facade, the Mountain Grand is a delightful place to call home after a big day exploring the Grampians. "The Balconies" Restaurant & "Cafe Grand" are so popular, especially on Saturday nights with mellow 30s to 80s live music - "the best music of all time" performed by a selected rotating parade of professional musicians. There are seven small & cozy guest bedrooms with fresh decor and en-suite bathrooms - 3 large rooms, some with spas. No pretentious 5 star luxury, just homely 3.5 star country comfort with wood fire sitting rooms, big screen TVs and club/cocktail bar. The whole property has WiFi. Full breakfasts and 3 course dinners are included in the tariff. Dinners are 3 courses of full choice of menu. Guests with special dietary needs are looked after by our caring chef. Breakfasts comprise an extensive buffet followed by individually cooked offerings. All are enjoyed in our restaurant "The Balconies" and the "Cafe Grand." The Indulgence Getaway also includes gourmet picnic lunches which are extremely popular for bushwalkers who are going to be in the mountains all day. On their return they are treated to our Chef's freshly baked afternoon teas. Guests will be well looked after by our friendly staff & will find enjoyment (to add to the dining experience) relaxing in the various lounge areas with service from the licensed club bar. ... more   less
