“A honest home”
Reviewed 4 January 2016 for a stay in December 2015

Had a very relaxing four nights over the Christmas break. We're a family of four, including two very energetic young boys and the cottage had loads of room for us. We loved sitting around the kitchen table enjoying the generous breakfast provided before heading out for a morning stroll along the river.
We had day trips to Mt Gambier, Penola/Coonawarra as well as down to the coast; all approx. an hour away.
Despite the summer heat the cottage was cool enough, and the river was there for the boys to have a dip in the afternoon.
Ivy is a gracious host and treated the boys to help feed the calves, chickens and ducks.

“The place to escape the madding crowd”

The perfect place to escape the madding crowd! I have stayed at Tolka Cottage in different seasons but couldn't pick a favourite - all good. Lovely log fires in winter and very snug beds. Plenty of animal and plant life to experience within walking distance of the cottage - and I love taking my breakfast outside and listening to the bird life. I will definitely return!

“Beautiful country get away, just what the Dr ordered”

We really enjoyed our stay at Tolka cottage. The property was cosy, oozed country charm, was very clean and well presented and had every amenity we required. The bed was comfy, the quality of linen lovely and the food left for our breakfast was a very high quality, some home made and straight off the farm.

Tolka is located about 20mins off the main highway and outside of the closest small nearby town, the closest neighbour is a short drive away. We enjoyed welcoming hospitality and enjoyed all the native wildlife as well as the farm animals on the property. We saw kangaroos, emus, a koala and plenty of birds while walking along the Glenelg river.

Internet was patchy which was a blessing for us, but I beleive there are certain carriers which get better reception.

There are many local attractions all within an hour to hour and half drive from the property. We will return for a longer stay to enjoy all the surrounding areas.

The property is really lovely and we felt very at home and comfortable there and Ivy was very welcoming and easy to contact and communicate with throughout the process.

I think the property was nicer than the photos show. It doesn't lol much on the outside but it really is a lovely cottage.

Liked best: The location - we love nature, wildlife and getting away from the city grind
Liked least: I would have loved a bathtub to soak in but understand it's not practical on a country property where rain water is used

“Wonderful, peaceful & comfortable cottage”
Reviewed 29 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We stopped for 2 nights on our way to Melbourne and then 1 night on the way back to Adelaide. Although the cottage is about 20 minutes off the main road from Penola to Hamilton, it was well worth changing our route to stay in this unique location. Unbelievable wild life, we have never seen so many kangaroos & it was lovely to wake to the dawn chorus from native birds as well as the farm's varied poultry collection.
The cottage is extremely comfortable & cosy even in the middle of winter and we were overwhelmed by the generosity of breakfast provisions provided.
We were travelling with our 2 dogs who were made very welcome & were very happy in the securely fenced garden.
We will have to go back in warmer weather as there's a lot to explore in the area & this is a wonderful cottage to use as a base.
Thoroughly recommend for a short or longer holiday!

Liked best: Peaceful, pristine farm environment.
Liked least: Might be difficult to find in the dark but car satellite navigation found it. Watch out for kangaroos & emus on the road

Thank you for your kind review. It was lovely having you here and seeing the dogs have such fun!
We look forward to seeing you all again when the weather is more clement, perhaps in the wild flower season when the scrub is teaming with orchids and wild flowers! Roll on September, October.
