“Budget (and fascinating!) accommodation”
Reviewed 11 May 2012

A bit of research found a bed (bathroom down the hall) and continental breakfast available at The Old Priory... formerly known as the Brigidine convent of Mt. St. Joseph, located in Beechworth, Australia. We chose the budget accommodation price. The website confirmed that it is a huge beautiful building, and would be an excellent experience. Upon arrival, we walked up the front sidewalk under huge, shady trees, with small social table/chairs under the trees each side of the walk. The stairway was magnificent, as was the entrance hall. The group in front of us were arranging their wedding ceremony and reception to be held at The Old Priory the following day. The bride's big sisters kept teasing her about getting married in this place... it has ghosts, they said.
We were the only two occupied rooms in this wing, so it's a long and lonely walk down that hall and around the corner to the bathroom. Our modest size room had a double bed and a bunk bed, generous extra bedding and towels. It was clean and very quiet.
We'd been told that there was a lounge area downstairs, so after dinner at a nearby restaurant we trotted down to check it out. We happened to meet a man watching TV who is associated with the Priory who said hello to each of us, then asked if anyone wanted wine. We said yes, so (for a modest price) the gent went into the building wine cellars, returning with an excellent bottle of wine (2006...a good year he said) and wine glasses. He then asked if we were interested in the history of the building, and was very happy to tell the story. The talk was fascinating.
Next morning, one of us went first down the long hall with towel over shoulder, to use the showers. My turn next... thank GOODNESS that I tested the water temp before stepping in. The "COLD" faucet delivered icy water, and the "HOT" faucet delivered water barely room temperature. Wow these nuns saved money on hydro! We went downstairs to enjoy our continental breakfast. We entered an area with tables, a television and couch, fridge and sink. Along one wall was a toaster, cereal bowls and three boxes of cereal. Probably the most "modest" continental breakfast to date. After eating, another guest suggested that we should wash our dishes and return them to the shelf for the next users.

Would I stay here again? Yes, but we would choose a room at the slightly higher bed and breakfast price range.
Would I recommend this budget experience to others? Absolutely! We knew when booking that we had chosen the lowest price range. The rooms were spotless, as were all of the facilities.

Room Tip: The budget priced rooms are worth the experience... for more comfort I would suggest choosing the be...

Beechworth is a place where you can see some different sights: gold mines, prison, charming shops, star watching, koalas, kangaroos and vineyards. There are also some excellent biking routes with excellent hills for the toughest bikers.
In the midst of it all is the Old Priory, 200 meters from the main street. It is a low cost dormitory with varying sized rooms with shared toilets and showers in the hallway. But as such very charming and peaceful. With grating floors, leaking windows, all sorts of different chairs on the terraces and faded interior it still beats any modern equivalent. Children would find it interesting exploring different floors.
We had breakfast, lunch and dinner served in the shared breakfast room on the first floor and we loved it. But I do not know if they normally serve food. We pre-ordered it before we came to the Old Priory.
Some of the rooms were quite small and lacked furniture, but we just went to other unoccupied rooms and took a chair. And I guess they would have given us one if we had asked for it.

Room Tip: Room vary in size and configuration. Ask for options if possible.

I travelled to Beechworth for a friends 30th birthday, there were about 30 of us that had travelled from Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. The old priory suited exactly what we needed, a place for all of us to stay together whether we were in coulples or singles as it had private rooms or rooms with 4 or 5 beds. they provide a basic breafast which considering how cheap it is it isn't necessarry. I would definatley stay there again if I was going down with a group of friends.

Room Tip: If you seek privacy, don't choose the old chapel room as it's right next to the front desk.

A great place to stay in a beautiful old town. We often struggle to find rooms or affordable apartments for our family of 5.

Reasonably priced, comfortable beds, and the kids had an excellent time exploring the old halls and passageways.

Linen and bathrooms nice and clean. Room cool on a 40 degree day. Great to be able to walk into town for dinner, many other hotels too far out of town.

Only negatives were the diffulculty in trying to check in (no one at recepetion or answering phone, although when they did come they were very friendly) and the dust on the crockery and glassware.

We stayed here for one night during a weekend trip to Beechworth. It was a nice old house with a sense of history to it. The room was small but tidy, but had plenty of blankets, an electric blanket and a heater. Good thing, since the house was quite cold and draughty. They had a log fire going on in a room in the basement which was nice. The bathrooms were, however, freezing cold. Breakfast was included but was very basic. The price was good compared to other places in Beechworth.
