Quirky building amongst the trees

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 June 2021
This is an art deco building built in 1937 as accommodation for nurses. I had a 'suite' with a bedroom, a bathroom and a small lounge area. It's slightly tatty but very comfortable. The building is set up on a hill just outside the town amongst a wonderful extensive garden and a number of other historic buildings including an old asylum.

New management had just taken over when we arrived (Easter 2021) so the service was somewhat chaotic and there was no wifi - but I'm sure that will all be fixed by now.

I'd stay there again.

Great place to stay in Beechworth. On site restaurant and bar offering reasonable prices.
Accommodation simple but spacious.
Check the lift is working if you have disability requirements.
Staff very friendly and service great.

We stayed here recently, thought it would be atmospheric and a bit different, which it was.....
These former nurses quarters are part of the Mayday Hills conservation area, a huge area, but don’t ask for a map..... but you are welcome to take a picture of the 2 they have.
It encompasses the old asylum which runs ghost and historic tours, which might be fun, but we were only there for 2 days and Beechworth is a great place to explore.
The room was shabby with peeling paint and marked doors, but the worst part is.... NO AIR CONDITIONERS! Just a fan which makes you think you are sleeping in a room with a helicopter!
If you hang your towels up to save water, they don’t change the small ones or tidy the bathroom.
I know it’s cheap, but we didn’t expect this lack of care.
A good 15 minute walk to the town which will definitely keep you fit 😁

This is a gracious old building. Absolutely authentic deco. It could use some TLC, but it is comfortable and clean with a good bathroom. Beats the sterility of a motel.

Pretty quiet for us on this visit, and lovely grounds around

Interesting building to look at but not suited to being a hotel. The only positive is that the bed is quite comfortable but there is so much noise and the room was so hot that it was still hard to sleep. You are constantly disturbed by the noise of slamming doors (from anywhere in the building). We could also hear the people in the next room talking and coughing. There’s no air conditioning so the room was incredibly hot. A small fan was provided but was ineffective and noisy and so cannot be left on during the night. The breakfast was very basic and quite disappointing. The whole place needs a good clean inside and out. I would not stay here again.

This was our second stay here. First time was exactly 12 months earlier. This time with friends, our first impressions on arrival at the building this time was a little little disappointing. The gardens and the building itself is in desperate need of a clean and some tidy up/maintenance. Like the last visit, the room was nice and clean and the bed comfy so that’s the main reason for the three stars. Maybe it was because our room was on the third floor but the shower water pressure disappeared at peak times but perfectly good at other times. Musty smells on the odd occasion and squeaky floors... it is an old building after all.
The George Kereford motel, (the main-stay of the establishment) just a short walk away has the administration, restaurant and swimming pool etc, this too was noticeably lacking attention to maintenance. The swimming pool’s water was in need of a clean as was the furniture around it, and the paving could have done with a pressure wash. Ants were in some areas around the pool’s edge too making it uninviting.
It’s not all bad though. The admin, restaurant and bar staff were very friendly. Meals were average.
Overall, it’s good value if all you’re after is a clean, air conditioned room for a couple of nights.
