Great value

This is a gracious old building. Absolutely authentic deco. It could use some TLC, but it is comfortable and clean with a good bathroom. Beats the sterility of a motel.

Pretty quiet for us on this visit, and lovely grounds around

Interesting building to look at but not suited to being a hotel. The only positive is that the bed is quite comfortable but there is so much noise and the room was so hot that it was still hard to sleep. You are constantly disturbed by the noise of slamming doors (from anywhere in the building). We could also hear the people in the next room talking and coughing. There’s no air conditioning so the room was incredibly hot. A small fan was provided but was ineffective and noisy and so cannot be left on during the night. The breakfast was very basic and quite disappointing. The whole place needs a good clean inside and out. I would not stay here again.

This was our second stay here. First time was exactly 12 months earlier. This time with friends, our first impressions on arrival at the building this time was a little little disappointing. The gardens and the building itself is in desperate need of a clean and some tidy up/maintenance. Like the last visit, the room was nice and clean and the bed comfy so that’s the main reason for the three stars. Maybe it was because our room was on the third floor but the shower water pressure disappeared at peak times but perfectly good at other times. Musty smells on the odd occasion and squeaky floors... it is an old building after all.
The George Kereford motel, (the main-stay of the establishment) just a short walk away has the administration, restaurant and swimming pool etc, this too was noticeably lacking attention to maintenance. The swimming pool’s water was in need of a clean as was the furniture around it, and the paving could have done with a pressure wash. Ants were in some areas around the pool’s edge too making it uninviting.
It’s not all bad though. The admin, restaurant and bar staff were very friendly. Meals were average.
Overall, it’s good value if all you’re after is a clean, air conditioned room for a couple of nights.

I love Beechworth it is my happy place. Previously I have stayed at the George Kerford which is at the same location and I was happy. The nurses quarters are a beautiful Art Deco building remaining from the asylum days. Our family suite was a good size, the room was very warm but it was noisy and the broken toilet button should have been fixed. Breakfast was included in the room and was in the George building and whilst basic it was ok. The web page and booking site is confusing and even though I had stayed here before I was still confused.

As you would, know, this is part of the old Beechworth Asylum. The place is privately owned and bits of it have been sold off to private enterprise. The Nurses Quarters are part of The George Kerferd Hotel - and it is totally separate to the GK Hotel.

There is adequate signage to direct you to check-in. I was told where the accommodation was and the parking area - which is at the rear of the Nurses Quarters.

We had booked a "Deluxe Queen Suite" for two nights. This actually turned out to be two rooms, with a bathroom in the middle. One room had a couch and cupboard with a TV and the other was the bedroom. One assumes that when the building was in fact the nurses quarters, the room with the couch was another bedroom and the two rooms shared the bathroom.

Overall the accommodation was a good size. There was no view - only that of the car park. It was quiet and comfortable. The bathroom only had a shower and sink, but was a good size and had everything you needed. There were heaters in each room and the rooms were comfortable.

Breakfast is served from 8am-10am in the GK Hotel - which is a two minute walk. It's only a Continental breakfast, but enough to get you going for the day and was included in the room rate.

There is an outdoor balcony off a common area outside the lift. The balcony gets the afternoon sun, has a view over the grounds and given it was only about 10C, a cup of afternoon tea in a bit of sunshine would have been very nice. We went out to the balcony only to find a broken chair and a mass of cobwebs and dirt. A pity. It would take an hour to clean the balcony up, replace the rotting broken chair. A coat of paint would top it off. Just a thought......

Cost for two nights was $235 which included the breakfast. This is a very reasonable price when compared to other places in Beechworth and it's a unique venue.

We arrived late and had trouble locating reception and were unsure where to park as there were no designated parks for check in and signs up everywhere saying not to park on the grass. The room was overly warm and it wasn’t possible to change the temperature. A large and noisy generator was cutting in and out all night. Lights in the hallway were permanently on making it impossible to darken the room. I got allergies - unsure if it was dust mites from the bed or the mould. To top it off breakfast was strictly at 8 with no option for anyone needing to get away any earlier than that. In our case 7:30, or a breakfast basket we could prepare ourselves, would have been fine. Also I didn’t like the vibe of the place as it is a former mental asylum. Plus it is miles from the main town centre up a big hill which is not that convenient!
