We'd booked here to be near the lovely Centennial Park and to be close to an old friend who lives nearby - encouraged by the 'boutique' label adopted by the Hughenden.
What we found disappointing was the room: small, plain & poorly lit.
Not enough surface space to make a cup of tea without putting the electric kettle on the floor.
Similarly small bathroom with little space for the contents of our toilet bag.
Breakfast, which was served from the small reception desk, did not involve a lot of choice.
Also, difficult to find a place to park nearby.
On the positive side, they did have a pleasant open-air roof terrace adjacent to the room we occupied, but we weren't there at an appropriate time to make use of it.
I wouldn't book here again.

Room tip: Maybe some of the rooms in the hotel were larger & brighter than ours...?

Encreadibly small room. Insanely overpriced. Very shabby, in this case 'historic ' means ' desperately needs renovation'. The bathroom is the size of the pencil case, have to get out of it into the room to be able to open the shower door. The outside area is dirty, surrounded by the concrete walls and overgrown bushes. The place was riddled with mosquitoes, ants and flies. The worst of all that you can't trust them with your credit card. They charged us $25 dollars for water AND cleaning? No invoice or email or any communications at all ! Just took it off our card. And then made TWO MORE WITHDRAWALS without notification. Sent us an invoice post-factum after being confronted over the phone. The tone of email was very rude, no formal address or apologies or explanations or itemised cleaning services we are being charged for. RUDE, DECEITFUL, DIRTY NOT WORTHY OF ANOTHER CHANCE. BE AWARE!!!

General Manager, General Manager at The Hughenden Boutique Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded 6 September 2023

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback again regarding your recent stay at our boutique historic establishment.

We were genuinely surprised to come across your review. Had we been aware of your dissatisfaction during your six-night stay, we would have gladly offered guidance to help you find more suitable accommodations.

Some of our rooms are cozy and might not be suitable for guests who prefer more spacious accommodations. We have larger and more spacious rooms available, but you required a room to accommodate your dog which not all rooms here accommodate dogs.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused by mosquitoes and flies during your stay. We are located in an area surrounded by natural greenery, and at times, insects can be an issue, depending on the weather/season.

Following our phone conversation after your departure we found the room was left in a state. We understand accidents happen. We informed you about the cleaning charges via a phone a call once you departed. As explained in an email regarding your account. The water is 3 x $4.00 ($12) and $56.00 for laundering the duvet. Initially, we attempted to charge the entire amount to your card, but it was declined. Consequently, we processed a partial payment and adjusted the remaining balance a few days later.

We have stayed here on several occasions and each time we have been impressed with the attention and friendliness of this smaller boutique hotel. The staff are very obliging in accommodating our needs. We love the breakfast (included).

We adored the Hughenden. Especially Sebastian the Moodle who virtually had the run of the hotel, including his private courtyard! Everyone was fabulous! It's a wonderful Sydney find in a great location.

Room tip: Fabulously friendly for dog lovers.

This is a odd hotel to review, its a old quirky property unlike all the hotels we have stayed in while visiting Australia. room 25 had two windows one with obscured glass and the other with a view of a gable and car park. the room was very cold but the aircon would heat up the room plus a small heater was supplied, the bathroom was so cold we never used the shower. Im used to old floor boards that creek but room 25 was bad, I felt bad for the guests below us, this could and should be easily sorted.
On the plus side the staff are fantastic the room was spotless, good location for Sidney stadium or cricket and a walk to Bondi beach.
