We were worried after reading recent reviews but were happy with what we arrived to! For the price you pay you cant really complain! Has comfortable beds to sleep 12 as well as a fully equip kitchen and log fire. We managed to cook a full roast for ten with the equipment there which is more than you would expect from a rental! Not far from some beautiful walks, climbs and beaches. Only trouble we had was working out how to refill the Gas canister - we were there over Easter so there was no one around to help us but luckily one of our group managed to work it out. Some people might consider the non existent phone signal as a negative but we loved it as it meant we had some quality family time that wasn't interrupted by gadgets! It is true that there are some empty and broken down chalets and caravans around the bunk house but didn't worry us at all! Would come back!
The place was nice but a little bit scary.. Its true about the other review said, the place looks like a welsh chernobyl. Plus there's a problem with the water supply throughout the stay, we have to continuously check at the water pump house to make sure the water pump is working properly. Other that that.. All things were fine. A great place to stay with a small group..quiet and peaceful.
First impressions upon arrival were promising e.g. it was sign posted from the main road but soon it became evident that all was not well. Think of it as a welsh Chernobyl, no fall out or exclusion zone but the remnants of what was once a thriving holiday park were still in situ albeit very run down with no sign of life anywhere to be seen. Pulling up in what was the main courtyard we were greeted by 3 buildings with a "rustic" look or at least one we were staying in had the look, the other 2 had no enduring features other than dilapidation. Access to the bunkhouse was straight forward but there was a lack of instruction or any greeting at all from the owners and it soon became apparent a lack of heating.... As a group we are accustomed to "simple surroundings" but having to trace the gas supply back from the Bunkhouse via the other properties to a single gas bottle and change it was not something we felt we should have been required to do. If it was another group staying without the appropriate tools for the job then the stay a Cefn Coed would be short lived.... we now have heating and the ability to cook so we survived the night. The next morning we found signs of life, a lady walking passed the outbuildings collecting brambles in a pink wheelbarrow. It was obvious she did not want to engage with us but it soon became apparent that this was the owner. As soon as conversation began, she set off, down the lane and into obscurity.... In the daylight it was obvious the site was once a holiday park set out in acres of established nature and woodland, the problem was that nature had taken it back leaving holiday chalets unattended for years, dilapidated and open to the elements... very sad and eerie... a cross between the set of Deliverance and The Hills have Eyes... To sum it up, Cefn Ceod is either on the up pending huge financial investment but most likely on the way down through neglect and funding, I can now understand why they charge £190 per night !!. As a group you can cope with most things but for a family with young children, the location and accommodation is too rundown and dangerous. Fingers crossed it will once again reach its vast potential but i suspect this is now long gone.
The bunk rooms are compact but having a basin in the bedrooms helped with only one bathroom available. The open plan traditional space downstairs was ample for our needs, lots of parking and beautiful walks around. The owner was very accommodating to our late arrival.
We stayed at Cefn Coed for 2 nights at the end of Aug 2016. There was 12 of us and we sued this place as our base to climb Snowdon. 12 beds are packed into 2 small rooms with only one toilet and shower; not ideal for 12 people!
However there were 2 separate toilets outside which we discovered the next day, very handy.
The kitchn/dinner and lounge is spacious and well equip. The log fire indoors is prefect and the owners kindly left logs for us to use.
Overall it's good value for money if you are planning as stop-over base for other things.
