“Olde-worlde but we loved it!!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2012

My partner and I spent a Friday night at the Punch House in November. There is no on-site parking but we easily found a parking spot in a side street.

If modern furnishings and an immaculate, minimalist style room are your thing then this is not the place for you. The room was small with a tiny shower room, very old fashioned and the furniture and deco was dated but we absolutely loved it. It wasn’t 100% clean either but as clean as you could expect for such an old building. We didn’t return to the room until after the pub downstairs had shut so I can’t comment on how noisy the rooms are before 1am.

The staff are a credit to the place and were polite and helpful and one staff member even lent us his own personal iron to take to the room. We had a few drinks at the pub downstairs which was lively and full. The entertainment was brilliant and we will definitely be returning to stay again. We didn’t eat there or stay for breakfast so I can’t comment on the food.

The only thing I thought strange was we were constantly referred to as “the Welsh couple!” Isn’t Monmouth in Wales????? Regardless, we will definitely be returning soon.

Got a late booking thanks to my girl friends family. Had no idea what I was to expect but I was very happily surprized to find a well run cosy pub with great good and the perfectly romantic bedroom. Price was very very good considering the day that it was. Would recommend.

Room Tip: Room number 4 has the four pillared bed :)

Being slap bang in the middle of Monmouth which is a great launchpad for the Black Mountains and Wye & Welsh valleys this location is ideal. The double room was a touch on the small side (the bedside cabinets had been put in sideways to make them fit). Looking out onto the main street meant that there was little choice about whether to take part in Monmouth's night life (which consisted among other things of deliveries to the supermarket opposite) ... it was making its noisy way past the window!

Definitely do NOT eat here. The breakfast (additional charge) was swimming in grease. My evening meal was dry and bland served with vegetables that we so over-cooked I wondered whether they had been sitting around all day. There is a superb Indian just up the road (towards the church) and a reasonable Mexican restaurant even closer so you really don't have to eat the badly cooked pub-grub.

We stayed here on a friday evening. Didn't arrive until late and after being shown to our room by a really friendly and helpful manager we had a look around Monmouth. We found this little inn great as it did meals until 9.30pm, traditional pub grub, nothing fancy but as described. The room is of course dated and old, in fitting with the building, this is not, and doesn't claim to be 5* but the bedding was clean, plenty of BIG towels (bonus), plus we had a four poster bed - room 4. and even though our room was above the main door of the pub, we slept fine, a lot less noisier than we expected, but don't stay here if you need complete quiet to sleep, this is a pub remember. Hubby was pleased at the cheap pints (£2.45) and I got a bottle of wine at the bar for under a tenner, plus there was live music on that ngiht. Great for a quick escape and for £39.99 for the ROOM! you can't beat it. Monmouth is a beautiful town, really impressed by it and will definately go back for a more thorough look around the shops, which were lovely. Helpful staff, cheap clean room, nice food...would recommend if on a budget.

Room Tip: room 4 has the four poster bed!
