Our family (2 adults + 3 children) had a wonderful holiday here. The house is extremely clean and comfortable and well stocked with everything we needed. The location was lovely and quiet with a nice view of the valley. We bought duck eggs from the farmhouse down the track from us and explored up the large hill that our home sat on.
Lendalfoot is the nearest beach, very quiet and beautiful (we had a BBQ on the beach)
Girvan is about 15 minutes away with plenty of shops, eateries, ice cream shops etc, a big ASDA for supplies, a harbour and a big beach (perfect for eating haggis suppers on)!
I would recommend visiting Culzean Castle which is a very impressive National Trust property, and the beautiful village of Alloway which is the birthplace of Robbie Burns and a beautiful place to spend a day with lots to see. We also travelled to Loch Trool which has the highest peak in Southern Scotland (Merrick?) and a stunning 5 mile walk around the Loch.
We also visited the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Observatory for a night time session with the astronomers there which was fantastic and reasonably priced - just make sure you make the journey in a car which can handle a little rough terrain as the woodland track up to the top of the hill was a bit hairy!
We really enjoyed our holiday and this home was the perfect base for our travels or to spend a lazy day!
Thank you to our hosts for being so welcoming and also for the lovely gift of Border biscuits! Yum!
Great to be back in this wonderful house.
This year we specially appreciated how clean the house was and how good the beds are.
We had a bad experience a week later in an other rental.
Too bad the dishwasher broke down after a couple of days.
Still the comfort, quality, nice style and location of this house made it a wonderful week.
One minus point, but I don't know if that can be solved, is that the house smells musty.
Cairnhill is a comfortable cottage with all 'mod cons' set in the beautiful countryside of the Stinchar Valley ('ch' as in church not as in loch!). Birds abound in the trees at the edge of the property - including Nuthatch and Great Spotted Woodpecker. Eggs (duck's and hen's) may be bought from a roadside box at the foot of the hill and they are delicious. This area of South and East Ayrshire offers many lovely places to visit - Culzean Castle and Dumfries House, the whole Burns' experience around Alloway and Machlin, and beaches at Girvan and Ballantrae, among others. There are no eating or drinking places within easy walking reach but the cottage lends itself to sitting outside - as we were able in bright, warm sunshine - or around an open fire in the lounge, with a glass of wine. Wi-fi is available, if you need it, but mobile phone signals are intermittent (at best) so relax and accept that you are on holiday and away from it all! Do try 'Austins' restaurant near the harbour at Girvan - you will need to reserve a table. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our break at Cairnhill for the peace and quiet and comfort of the house and its location.
