This is our fifth visit to the area and our second to Windyhill. We love the house and the main kitchen and living area which is on the first floor where huge windows provide beautiful views across the water to Isle Ristol. The well-appointed house makes it easy to provide meals for everyone, but we were often tempted to the nearby Am Fuaran bar where freshly caught langoustines and beautiful haddock and hake along with steaks were available to us at reasonable prices. Ullapool, the main town is a beautiful 20 mile drive away but a local post office along with Achiltibuie stores are open throughout the year. Aileen, who has become a friend to us, has a great craft shop relatively near to Windyhill. Stac Pollaidh mountain looked fabulous this year whether you wanted to climb it or like me simply photograph it - and this year we saw lots of wild deer too. A trip to Lochinver along 'the wee mad road' (see the book written by Jack Maloney) is essential along with a visit to Lochinver Larder for some of the best pies in the UK. Badentarbet Green is nearby and remains one of my favourite spots where remnants of the salmon and herring industries can be seen. Old Dornie is a lovely small harbour which provides a beautiful view back to Windyhill itself. Our party feel this is a magical place where any stress disappears within hours of arrival. We cannot wait to go again - it is beautiful at any time of the year.
Myself, my wife and my dog Ralph just returned from a week long break at Windyhill. Everything about the place was fantastic. The cottage itself was of easy access and in a beautiful location, the view from the main window is quite simply breathtaking. We spent a lot of time sitting by the window reading books with the log burner on. A few minutes away there's a lovely place called achnahaird beach we spent a lot of time here as the dog loved it. We generally spent about 1-2 hours down there each walk as it was so nice. There is also a lovely little pub which is just a brief walk called am furran we went here at end of holiday for a meal and wished we had went sooner as the food was great.
Coming home from here was hard as it was such a relaxing holiday. Our dog never slept so much since we got home.
Would highly recommend this place
Just returned from a fabulous 2 week break at Windyhill. Fantastic location, lovely house, clean and well equipped. 2 weeks of total relaxation with breathtaking views from the large window in the living area. Our 11 year old son and dogs also loved it. We'll be back.
My partner and I and our 4 collies visited Windyhill for a week long break and really didn't want to come home! Firstly - thank you so much for being dog friendly..!!!
Being fairly familiar with the area, we had an idea of what to expect from that and places to go and things to do etc.
The lodge itself is just beautiful..!! There is loads of space for a lot of people and even more for just 2. We also got an unexpected low occupancy discount! The 3 bedrooms all have comfy beds and are toasty and cozy even in the snow with the underfloor heating, which is great!
As we were doing a lot of walking in the great Scottish winter, the wee laundry room downstairs was invaluable! It houses a washing machine and dryer and also clothes pegs if you want to hang out your washing! Also, an ironing board, Hoover etc
The wooden staircase to the upper floor is lovely and easy to sweep the dog hair from!!
The upper floor is also toasty and has a lovely lived in wooden floor and lots of seating areas - although we always sat at the gigantic window! We did use the log burner and sadly ran out of logs before the end of the week, but as this was for effect and not actual heat then that was ok! As the upper floor is open plan I did worry about being cold but I actually had to open the kitchen window when I was cooking as it was too warm.
The cottage itself is equipped with everything you need and more. It's tastefully decorated, exceptionally clean and very inviting.
The garden is huge and fully enclosed.
Remember your flip flops as there's a path to the hot tub and it can be a cold walk without them! Towels are provided for hot tub use. Sitting in the hot tub in the snow looking out at the sea and the islands is heaven on earth!
The pub is about an 8 minute walk away, and there's a torch at the cottage to borrow for the stagger home ;) The food served at the pub is of a very high standard and the people are very friendly!
There's loads to do when you're out and about and you never get fed up with the surrounding beauty!
The customer service we have received from Mark & Sadie has been second to none! Emails always answered promptly and helpful in every way.
We have a 5 year plan to move north that we're 2 years into. First dibs on Windyhill if you guys are selling up at that point..!!
We'll definitely be back if you'll have us :)
We spent a week at Windyhill as a family with my Dad joining us for most of the week. This house definitely has a "wow" factor. When we arrived, after exploring the bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs, coming up the stairs and seeing the amazing view was fantastic.
The house is very well equipped - the owners have done a great job of equipping this house and have definitely responded to all of the minor niggles that some other reviews have reported. We really could not fault this house in any way. Perfect.
Windyhill is a great location for exploring the wonderful area - amazing walks for all capabilities. We did walks to the Falls of Kircaig, along the side of Coigach, round Stac Pollaidh, and along past Reiff. It was great to come back from these to the hot tub, the views across the isles and the occasional sightings of porpoises in the bay.
Recommend taking a good set of binoculars to keep a look out for wildlife wherever you go including for that amazing picture window.
