We have stayed at Balvraid Steading for the last 4 years and have booked again for 2013. It has the most stunning views over Loch Fleet which change constantly with the tides.
The house is ideal for families and groups, with flexible accommodation and it is very well equipped. The furnishings are top notch and the bedding straight out of the 'White Company' catalogue.
The owners live locally and are happy to arrange fishing, shooting & stalking for guests if you give them some notice. There is good walking over the hills & moors and the wildlife is plentiful - we have seen Ospreys, Grey & Harbour Seals, Pine Marten & Hen Harriers all within a mile or two of the Steading.
We go for the salmon & sea trout - the estate has miles of spate river fishing plus lochs. The fish are not huge but fight well!
Downsides? Very few really. You need a car as the house is on an unmade road about 3 miles from the nearest town, but there's no need for a 4x4 if you take it carefully. And the weather, of course, but Dornoch seems to have it's own microclimate and is often dry when it's wet inland. Still, if it does rain, you just light the log burner and enjoy a wee dram.....
