We have stayed in America Cottage several times, and our recent stay was as good as ever. The cottage is very well equipped, with everything you would need for a relaxing holiday. It is located in a peaceful rural area, but very close to all the amenities and sites of Moray. The grounds are well maintained with a beautiful pond, and the views from the cottage are lovely. The owners are extremely helpful, but not over-intrusive. We will defininitely be staying at America Cottage again as it is our favourite place to stay in Scotland.

“Quiet comfortable and idillic”
Reviewed 23 October 2012 for a stay in October 2012

This cottage is exactly as advertised, it is a very high standard and very well presented. Situated slightly inland of the Moray Firth coast close to Rafford in a very rural location it is ideal for exploring the Cairgorms, Speyside, the coast as well as Inverness and Aberdeen. It is quiet and peaceful and the owner's homemade shortbread is to die for!!

“Lovely property but not as private as it looks on the photos”

The cottage looked secluded and isolated in the brochure photographs with an open fire and extensive grounds to walk our two collies in. It looked ideal. Unfortunately the photographs do not show the close proximity of the owner’s cottage and that the garden allocated to the holiday cottage is not extensive or fenced off from the main road. The cosy open fire has also been bordered up and replaced with an electric fan heater.
As the brochure says, wi-fi is available but only if you walk across to the owners utility room. The same walk is required if you want to queue for the washing machine and tumble drier. We went there for peace and quiet but unfortunately the quiet was broken most days by the sound of the owner mowing the lawn, strimming or cutting the hedges.

To summarise, we loved the area especially the Moray coastal towns of Burghead and Hopeman. The cottage, although comfortable and had everything available for a relaxing holiday, unfortunately failed to deliver. Do not be fooled by the brochure photographs, you are not alone!

Management Response

We are very surprised at some of the reviewer's comments, but will take action to correct any errors or misrepresentations we have made. In particular, we are disappointed that none of the comments were raised with us during his stay.
The reviewer complains that the open fire was bordered up and replaced with an electric fan heater. However, the web-site clearly states that “heating is by electric storage heaters and a fire effect heater, and an open fire is available if necessary”. Indeed, the photograph on the web-site shows the fire effect heater. When a customer prefers an open fire we simply remove the electric heater from the fire place, and supply the wood and coal free of charge.
The web-site states “the cottage has half an acre of its own private grounds, and shares access with the owners to most of the remaining 3 acres”. We don’t claim that the cottage garden is “extensive” and are open about the fact that the remaining area is shared with us. Also the garden allocated to the cottage has a 6ft fence between it and the minor road, however, the shared area is unfenced.
We are not sure who the reviewer had to queue with to use the washing machine and tumble drier, as they are in a utility room attached to our house, and we are the only occupants, and always give priority to the visitors. Also, wi-fi is usually available in the cottage, though with a weak signal, so we advise guests to use the utility room if they have any problems. We will, however, make sure these points are clear on the web-site.
We always try to ensure that we carry out grounds maintenance when the guests are out. Unfortunately we seem to have failed in this case.
All the photographs are genuine, but we will replace the overall view with a more representative photograph which shows where our house is in relationship to the cottage.
