“Nice hotel but some minor niggles”
Reviewed 28 February 2012

Booked with a Groupon deal and took the deluxe room upgrade, although we didn't get the daily fruit and chocs with the upgrade as mentioned on the hotel website - guess you have to forego something with a Groupon deal. Very spacious, clean room with excellent free WiFi. Two very comfortable chairs, desk, very large bed (though maybe a touch too firm for our liking) with good quality sheets and blanket. Not the usual cheap synthetic rubbish duvets that seems the norm in a lot of hotels these days. There was a good sized LED TV with all free view channels.

Bathroom was clean and spacious, but the bathroom suite was a rather dated coloured affair. The lighting in the bathroom was rather poor and the mirror was rather small with no surround lighting - not ideal for doing make-up or shaving.

Coffee lounge has wonderful view over Chessel beach. Great for morning coffee and afternoon tea. But the service was not the quickest, however it does gives more time to enjoy the wonderful view. Choice of cereal at breakfast is a bit limited, but the cooked breakfast ingredients were of good quality.

The very helpful person on reception supplied a good detailed map showing some of the very nice walks all over the island. However, if you do decide to go exploring, watch where you tread, there is dog mess everywhere. Portland dog walkers have some very inconsiderate types amongst their number.

In general this is a nice hotel, with very helpful friendly staff . But little things like a bedside lamp not working, a toilet seat that is loose, the toilet roll holder being out of reach behind you when using the loo, a bath panel that is coming away and a shower that doesn’t switch back to tap operation all smack of a lack of attention to detail. These are all things that any regular hotel user will be familiar with in many hotels, but is it really that hard to get it right?

With the above in mind, at rack rate, this hotel is far too expensive, but with an offer or special deal, it’s not bad value and well worth considering.

We have just returned from an absolutely fabulous weekend at the Heights, many thanks to the Begbrook R 'n' R people for organising the weekender, great bands both nights.

More importantly fantastic hotel, the best we've stayed at in this country, top marks for the food, room and staff. Not forgetting the panoramic view from the restaurant scanning across from Portland harbour to Chesil beech.

Definately will stay there again.

Just had a weekend Birdbreak at The Heights. We have stayed there before and can't speak highly enough about this hotel. It is very clean, the staff are very courtious, friendly and helpful. What a fantastic view from the Bistro. Food was excelent and the Bistro staff were very helpful in varying some of the dish's to suit individul needs of oiur group. Would certainly recomend this hotel to all.

Room Tip: Pool side rooms close to reception can be noisy if the is a wedding or similar event.

We and a group of friends decided to spend New Year at this hotel. A package deal at £500 per couple for 3 nights with bed, breakfast and evening meals. On arrival greeted with a complimentary and very good cream tea - which was welcome after the long drive from the midlands. The first night’s 3 course evening meal was good, but not exceptional. Breakfast is buffet style, and I have to say excellent - wide variety, well cooked and good ingredients. New Year's dinner (4 courses) was good and a reasonable choice – certainly enhance by the pre dinner complimentary drinks and canapés. Good disco to follow and usual the New Year's frivolities at midnight. Final evening meal, much like the first - good but not outstanding.

Generally a pleasant hotel in a great location. The staff and general service levels were excellent and could not be faulted. A surprisingly good range of facilities (they even have a gym and spa beauty treatment centre) but some parts of the hotel now look a little tiered and in need of an update.

During the winter months on the whole probably more suited to the more mature traveller than young families although in summer there is an excellent outdoor pool area.

Room Tip: See if you can get a room with a sea view. Ours lloke over the pool, which was OK in winter, but su...
