We recently spent a weekend at Mortons House Hotel as an extended family - three rooms for six adults and three children (including a baby) and the hotel staff couldn't have been more welcoming ! We ate three meals plus breakfasts in the hotel (including a special Valentine's Dinner, which was superb, matched with an excellent and reasonably priced wine list.)

There used to be underground passages from Corfe Castle to the hotel; if they were still in use today the hotel would be besieged by admirers, I'm sure !

We'll be back !

At the end of the day, it was not a difficult decision to choose Mortons House as the ideal venue to celebrate my 50th Birthday. I had greatly enjoyed both lunch and dinner at the Hotel on three or four occasions in the past and this, coupled with the very warm and enthusiastic welcome we received when making initial enquiries about possible birthday celebrations, left me in no doubt that I had found exactly what I was looking for!
Mortons House is charming. From the lovely Oak Room lounge and the highly individual, sensitively furnished, bedrooms to the peaceful dining room and cosy bar, the Hotel has a truly relaxing and "private country house" feel. My guests occupied all the bedrooms on the night of my party, and this exclusivity was rather magical.
We enjoyed an exceptionally good dinner, the menu having been specially created with enthusiastic input and support from Bev Clayton and her Head Chef. It is clear why Mortons House has achieved the notable - and well deserved - accolade of two AA rosettes. A special thank you to the kitchen team for making Rum Baba for me; a long time favourite!
A lot of hotels are based within historic buildings or are located amidst beautiful surroundings. Many have tastefully furnished and well appointed rooms, often with lots of additional facilities. These many material attributes are, however, often rendered meaningless by the poor attitude and lack of customer care training demonstrated by unsmiling staff. It was, therefore, wonderful to experience the very courteous, helpful and highly professional service delivered by all the Mortons House team at all times. Nothing was too much trouble, and their positive and cheerful "can do" attitude should be an example to all.
I rarely give any hotel or restaurant full marks. However, in the case of Mortons House, I have no hesitation whatsoever in doing do.

This is a "country house" hotel with a restaurant. To my mind it just doesn't quite make the grade. There is perhaps a little too much shabby and not enough chic. I didn't eat at the restaurant (it was very expensive) so I can't comment on that.

Our room was rather dark and with poor lighting. The knobs had fallen off two drawers of the dressing table and there were no toiletries in the bathroom when we arrived. The resident's lounge, with its very dark panelling, was much to dark to read in whilst we waited for a friend to arrive. I specifically said that one of us was vegetarian when we booked. On our first morning we were advised that vegetarian would be the full English without bacon or sausage. The full English was minute portions of food on an enormous plate and the remaining stuff was from jars or tins or packets - nice jars (jams), packets (cereals) and tins (I suspect the pears in Earl Grey syrup and the fruit compote were tins) but nothing out of the ordinary. The next day there was vegetarian sausage.

True, the staff are very friendly and very welcoming but this doesn't quite make up for the drawbacks or the cost.

Oh, and it isn't a good idea to keep the door to your office open all the time when what guests see as they go past is a very, very untidy space.

Room Tip: Not a room on the busy main road, even though the hotel is set back from it.

We chose the hotel for a weekend break to celebrate our Golden Wedding and couldn't have spent it anywhere better. It had a very friendly atmosphere but was run very professionally. Our room was very nicely furnished, the bed comfortable and the bathroom was clean and warm. The food was wonderful and the menu had such tempting choices that it was difficult to decide what to have. Breakfast was another feast and I can thoroughly recommend the scrambled egg and smoked salmon which we are really missing since returning home. The countryside around is beautiful whether walking in the countryside or enjoying the nearby beaches. We couldn't fault anything about our stay and just wish it could have been longer. We very much hope we will be returning.
We have to add that we are surprised by the comment about it not allowing children as there were some there when we stayed and were all made very welcome.

We decided to stay in this hotel for my husband’s 40th birthday as their restaurant has a good reputation and we thought it would be convenient to stray with the kids in the same place where we celebrate to avoid hussle.
And after making all the arrangements for the dinner (including a surprise cake) and mentioning we will be with 2 kids, when we arrived to the hotel we were told that kids are not allowed in the restaurant!!!!!!!
How disappointing this was for us.
Also, we were given the loft rooms, where there were doors leading to a tiny front room but it was impossible to isolate the two rooms from the outside world. As we had to leave the doors open between the rooms in order to hear the kids, we practically slept with the door open all night!
So if you are over 60, I am sure you will have a great time but for families, stay away.

Thank you for your comments and taking the time to write. You'll be pleased to hear that the Loft Room underwent a complete refurbishment just prior to Christmas and is now a fully integrated suite enjoying lovely views of the castle. We are very pleased with the result and the suite has proved very popular with the families who have recently stayed. We look forward to welcoming you back - keep an eye on our website for some great offers.
