The Bantham to Thurlestone Circular Walk
More attraction details
Attraction details
Owner description: With its sandy beach and clean surf, as well as views across the water to Burgh island, Bantham is a popular hideaway holiday spot for the rich and famous. The 3.8 mile walk on the Coast Path passes the thatched cottages in the picturesque villages dating from the 16th century. There are tales of Vikings and smugglers. Archaeologists have found that some settlements here go back to the Stone Age.

What a great little place, perfectly formed and very charming with a great choice of fish on the menu. Flavours, spices used just complimented everything. Service and the warm family feel made this a great night to remember. Loved sitting on a table with people we didn’t know but if you’re looking for a romantic meal for two not recommended. This place is fun, lively and very atmospheric.

This was the first coastal walk of our break in Thurlestone. We had a beautiful sunny day and this together with the views made it very special. The walk skims the golf course for probably half of the circular walk so we kept our spaniel on the lead (it's also wise because the cliffs present shear drops to the sea). Continuing past the golf course the track starts it's descent with full views of Burgh Island with its hotel and the river Avon estuary, which was full of surfers on the day we did it. A truly beautiful view. We then followed the path around the banks of the estuary (more beautiful views) and walked through Bantham village with its thatched cottages and pub (Sloop Inn). The only slight 'challenge' during this walk was following the track up the hill from Bantham across a field - very steep!!! However once at the top of the hill you are more or less back in Thurlestone. We did this walk in the morning and in the afternoon went to Salcombe.

Excellent circuit to view fab beaches and Devon coastline. Hilly, but easy smooth path. would recommend stops at the beach house over the bridge at South Milton sands for coffees or lunch and the Sloop in at Bantham for Dinner. Or alternatively the Gastrobus at Bantham carpark does great cakes :-)

Amazing views, good in all weather, and leads to 2 beautiful towns with access to so much. Best in June-August to catch the Summer weather. Many beaches to stop at along the way and a couple of benches to relax at. Thurlestone is a small town with a nice hotel if you want to stay overnight but Bantham has some lovely restaurants.
