“Exquisite in every detail”
Reviewed 2 November 2015 for a stay in October 2015

We booked Down Cottage as it is two fields away from the cottage of a friend who has just got married in nearby Chagford. We know the area well and were looking forward to a few days enjoying Dartmoor in the autumn. From the second we opened the front door, we knew Down Cottage is something exceptional. Every muted colour, each carefully chosen piece of antique furniture and all the modern adornments combine with the practicalities of a skillfully executed upgrade to create a convivial space for reading, conversation and sleep.

“Outstanding holiday accommodation.”
Reviewed 6 October 2015 for a stay in September 2015

Everything about this holiday accommodation exudes quality. For those who appreciate scenic views and a quiet situation the location is outstanding. Chagford with its attractive independent shops (there is also a small Spar supermarket), cafes and hostelries is only 10 minutes away by car. To get there it’s necessary to negotiate some single-track lanes, which are characteristic of most of Dartmoor and just require some careful, relaxed driving. In the other direction from the house another 10-minute drive takes you to Batworthy corner where there is a small parking place and you can walk out onto some classic moorland. A walk to the prominent Kes Tor with its small rock pools is highly recommended and for lovers of early history the surrounding area features numerous stone rows and the remains of hut circles. A short walk down the west side of the tree plantation takes you to the Walla Brook, an ideal spot for a picnic and great for kids (with supervision) to explore. A few hundred yards further on brings you to the mysterious Scorhill stone circle, which can be reached by taking the clapper bridge over the brook. For those who prefer their scenery to come with less effort the garden of the house, which the owners are happy for you to explore, is a delight. The upper part consists of a formal lawn and ‘natural’ rock gardens and even has its own tor with steps cut in for easy access. Further down the slope the garden has been planted with numerous attractive shrubs and then, after crossing a small leat, becomes more natural, culminating in a classic Dartmoor river with water tumbling and cascading over huge, moss-covered granite boulders. Anyone interested in industrial archaeology would also appreciate the tumbledown ruins just above the leat that are the remains of a Dartmoor ‘blowing house’ used for the smelting of tin. It may not look much at a casual glance but its historic importance is such that is in fact a listed building.
As regards creature comforts and facilities, Down Cottage would put most hotels to shame. There are two spacious bedrooms, one featuring a king-size double bed while the other has two comfortable single beds. Both bedrooms are beautifully furnished and there is also a TV in each. Adjoining both bedrooms there are built-in wardrobes with ample hanging and storage space for clothes. Upstairs there is also a large lounge with two comfortable sofas, a TV and DVD player plus a further built-in wardrobe with hooks and a long rail for hanging clothes. The upstairs siting of the lounge also provides excellent views across to Chagford and nearby Meldon Tor. Other upstairs facilities are the bathroom, with a bath that features a wider shower area at one end, and a separate toilet. Downstairs can be found the tastefully furnished dining room with its large dining table, a second toilet and a kitchen with a full range of equipment (including ceramic hob, oven, microwave and fridge with a small freezer compartment) and utensils for self-catering plus a wood burning stove for anyone staying in the colder months of the year. Tea lovers might like to note that the spring water is very soft so bring something like ‘Yorkshire’ or other tea bags designed for use with soft water if you don’t want the tea to taste ‘soapy’. Throughout the house there are extremely efficient radiators so you won’t be cold whatever the weather and the heating system also provides copious hot water. Just outside the kitchen is a large picnic table with bench seats and there is also a washing machine and tumble drier in the adjacent garage.
We enjoyed a wonderful week in this superb accommodation and cannot recommend it too highly for anyone who enjoys the Dartmoor countryside not to mention the teashops, hostelries and lively cultural scene of Chagford, which The Times newspaper recently rated as one of the best places to live in England.

“Fantastic stay”
Reviewed 25 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Travelled with hubbie, 12 and 8 year old girls and dog. We wanted a dog holiday and this was the perfect place. Beautiful cottage, homely, spacious, girls loved their bedroom, dog loved the grounds, safe enclosed paddock and extensive grounds to explore. Owners very welcoming. Dog was welcome everywhere we went and Chagford has some lovely pubs and tea shops. Girls loved seeing the animals wandering freely over the moors. We also enjoyed the Chagford show which was on whilst we were there. The House of Marbles was a hit with the girls as well where they also enjoyed watching the glass blowing. Definitely recommend this place.

“Outstanding and unusual property in a stunning setting on the edge of Dartmoor.”
Reviewed 10 April 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Thought long and hard about making this review in case we miss out on repeat bookings but since returning yesterday we have booked to go back again twice this year. Having holidayed in the Chagford area for 20 years in numerous properties Down Cottage is unigue; just a 35 minute stroll to the square for coffee and the morning paper or half an hour to Fernworthty Reservoir or to the moor - the setting is perfect. Its not a cottage but more of an elegant Edwardian hideaway furnished with comfortable modern sofas in the sitting room and elegant antique wing back chairs in the dining room. Feeling too tired to yomp down to the Teign Valley and Fingle Bridge no problem, this property has its own mini Teign Valley; over 10 acres of amazing gardens with moss covered boulders, rock pools - a paddlers paradise or ideal for a quiet read by a babbling brook.
