Description: Brixham's harbour-side restaurant offers Trinidadian Verna's native Caribbean cuisine alongside great local ribs & home-made steak burgers, local seafood and fun desserts. Carnival favourites Goat Curry, Saltfish & Ackee and Jerk Chicken take pride of place among a number of home-grown recipes - Trinidad Chicken & King Prawn Curry, Pineapple Pork, Legendary Lamb Shank and local Scallop & Ling Curry. Jerk Pork Skewers, Seafood Tart and San Fernando Spicy Prawns appear amongst the starters along with Patties, Gurnard Goujons, Home-made Samosas and Scallops & Hogs. We use local fish in a number of seafood dishes including Fish Bites and a number of curries. Vegetarians are offered Pumpkin Patties and Goat Cheese Samosas among the starters, followed by Sweet Potato & Black Bean Curry, Chilli sin Carne and even Jamaican Jerk Tofu among the Vegan options. A good part of the menu is Gluten-free as indicated in the online menu. Home-made Banana Cake, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Banoffee Pie, Morgan-spiced Rum Panacotta are complemented by Ice Cream, Sorbets, Pineapple Sundae and our own Rum Baba. For children, there are home-made Chicken Nuggets, Spaghetti Bolognese and more Ice Cream. Pepper Shack is fully licensed until midnight with Red Stripe, Sol, Peroni, local Dartmoor ales, Healey's Cornish Ciders, wines from around the world and a wide range of rums among the spirits. We also offer an extensive Cocktail Menu and even Ice Cream Liqueur Cocktails

We have never visited a Caribbean restaurant before, but the great reviews meant we gave it a try, and I'm so glad we did.
We were lucky enough to get a window table, with great views over the harbour. The staff were really friendly and helpful, guiding us through the menu and the atmosphere was great.
The food did not disappoint, we had dumplings, Jerk chicken (tasty, with a bit of a kick), Trinidad stewed chicken (just gorgeous) with rice and peas. My husband had the Sticky Toffee pudding, which was beautifully light and fluffy, and he said it was the best he's ever had (and he's a pudding man), I tried the Banana cake, which was lovely too.
We finished off with a couple of cocktails, just fab.
We will definitely visiting again if we're in town - give it a try!

Thanks very much ... we get a lot of new initiates coming in for their first enjoyable taste of Caribbean food ... as well as many who know it well, of course. The origins lie in a mix of Indian and African cooking ... so, familiar in part, but with a difference.

Glad you enjoyed!

Stumbled across this little gem up some stairs one evening when looking for a family meal in Brixham. Arrived without a booking and they accommodated us with a table for four next to the window overlooking the harbour. Friendly service with nice choice of Caribbean food and some local beers.

Walk around a fantastic little harbour town of Brixham....look and see lots and lots of brightly coloured shops, smell the sea air, then....you'll have the faint whiff of spice.....follow your nose and find Vernas Pepper shack.....
Open the door, see the rugby shirts and taste the food that's help 3....yes 3 professional rugby player sons that come from two amazing people, not forgetting the lovely daughter who.serves this wonderful food and one we did not meet....
The food is outstanding, well priced and tasty....very very tasty......
Look and stand in awe of the brightly coloured headresses and we luckily had the delight of meeting the wizardess that is Verna, and you soon realise the outfits match this ladies talents and personality....
Great little gem, worth the trip and the experience......
We will definitely be back again!!!
Thank you thank you thank you x x

Always try and visit this great little restaurant when down Brixham way and never disappoints. Food is always outstanding and service friendly.
The ribs to start are superb and mutton massala full of flavour, I can't comment on any deserts as have never been able to manage one as have been full from the first two courses.
You certainly won't go away hungry and best to be sure and book to avoid being disappointed.
Would definitely recommend a visit if in the area.

Haha ... I am always impressed when people manage 3 courses ... pretty sure I couldn't. Needless to say, if you do make it to desserts, they come in good size portions too.

We have had a good busy season over the Summer ... still welcoming new guests, of course, but it is nice that we get so many people coming back in when they are in Brixham.

Thanks for a very nice review!

First visit to the Pepper shack. Food was very good but spicy. Really enjoyed the chicken stew which was just right. Prawn and Chicken Curry was also very good. Will definitely return in the future
