My wife and I joined friends already staying at Vila Sogno, in the gorgeous little hilltop village of Acqualoreto, in order to celebrate her 60th. birthday, and from the minute we arrived we were so glad we made the journey. Our apartment was spacious and fully equipped with panoramic views of the distant hills and valleys from our bedroom window on one side and the village bell tower on the other. The bed was king sized and extremely comfortable. But the best part was outside. Our hosts, Brian and Rosemary, could not have been more gracious, welcoming and helpful in every way, and one of the many highlights of our stay was the elevated view from the garden patio, where we enjoyed many glasses of the fabulous local wine, while overlooking the pristine pool below.
There was ample parking for our car and right across the road was a fabulous little restaurant, where scrumptious local dishes were served at unbelievably reasonable prices. Just round the corner on the opposite side of the village square was the local bar, where we soon became friends with the two employees, Roberto and Paulo, both of whom could not have been more welcoming. The local inhabitants of the village, from 5 to 85, were also warm and friendly and even though our Italian was extremely limited, language was not a barrier in the slightest to being made to feel welcome by everyone we met.
It is well worth taking day trips to the ancient towns of Todi, Orvieto, and Nani, all of which were full of interesting histories and particularly beautiful old churches. And every place we visited had the most amazing restaurants, full of charm, atmosphere and imaginative menus.
The last word, however, must be with our hosts who made us feel like members of their family with their warmth and generosity of spirit. We cannot wait to return to enjoy this little piece of Heaven!
