This is a stunning canyon filled with a wide variety of flora and fauna and breaking taking views of the canyon walls. There are beautiful waterfalls and great hiking. Be sure to take the drive through this canyon if you are in the badlands of South Dakota.

This is a scenic drive that should not be missed. Go to the Visitors centre in Spearfish and get a guidebook before heading out. Set your trip meter to zero when you enter Highway Alt 14. This will help you get tot he right spots as you drive up the canyon. The geography is amazing and the plant and wildlife are abundant. There are several stops along the way - the highway is narrow and busy so be careful and watch for other vehicles. Be sure to stop at the "Dice" - two large blocks of rock in the Spearfish creek. Find a quiet path down to the creek to enjoy a few minutes of solitude with nature. There are a lot of trout in the stream and there are birds and other animals to watch. Take a cooler for cold drinks - it can get a little hot along the way in the summer. At Savoy - be sure to go down the hiking trail (novice level) to the bottom of Spearfish falls to take some pictures.

Very pretty drive through the canyon. We left from Spearfish, Drive the bypass, ate at Cheyenne Crossing, visited Deadwood and then on to Rapid City. The scenic drive took about 1.5 hrs with the stops. Bridal veil Falls was first. There is a small pull off and a walk across the road to View the falls. Further down the road you will see a sign for Roughlock Falls. Turn right and follow gravel road to parking lot. We thought we heard the Falls but it was just the river. There isn’t much signage but if you go to the left after parking you will see a small rock with an arrow pointing right. It is an easy hike down paved stairs to the bottom where the viewing is beautiful. It is worth the hike. The harder part is coming back up the stairs but just do it. It is worth it. We left the same way we came and upon exiting the Latchstring Inn is across the street where the final falls are. Spearfish Falls. There is an upper and lower observation. The upper is on the right side of the inn. It is really the upper. We could only see the very top where water was flowing over. We went to see the lower observation on the left side of the inn. It was another hike down and then back up so we decided to skip this one. Enjoyable morning.

Checkout Bridal Veil and especially Roughlock falls (behind the lodge in Savoy). Why 14A also has ample shoulders for bicycling too.

We drove the canyon and managed to see all 3 waterfalls - Bridal Veil Falls right next to the road, 1-mike hike to RoughLock Falls from Savoy, and 1/2 mile walk to lower observation of Spearfish Falls. Sunlight was pretty on the upper canyon walls. Many interesting wildflowers in bloom and saw a couple of beavers. Noisy, dusty ATVs kept running up and down the roads, the bane of someone looking for clean and quiet.
