This drive had it all: Tree-covered mountains, picturesque waterfalls and streams, dramatic rock formations, wildlife sightings, the works! It seemed like there was something breathtaking around each bend. There were many spots where you could pull off the road - great for shutterbugs or those wishing to get a closer view of things. A rubberneckers delight!

Heading down the canyon is very beautiful. Great trees, waterfalls and rock formations. There are several trails that are relatively easy and many stops for taking photos.

This is a pleasant drive that winds gradually through the canyon. It has a couple of small waterfalls along the way and fall colours in September and October. If you are looking to fill an afternoon in between the many attractions that the Black Hills have to offer, this is a good relaxing option.

What a beautiful, scenic drive. We stopped at Roughlock Falls and walked around a bit while enjoying watching the fish in the stream.

We were there at the peak of the fall foliage and the views did not disappoint. The drive is a big challenging, but not more than expected. We stopped at the first falls and a nice photographer told us to also check out Spearfish Falls. He was right, it was worth the hike down.

Wow what a gorgeous drive through Spearfish Canyon, we were there just as the trees started turning into their Autumn colours, absolutely divine. Some great and safe spots to pull over to take photos!

About an hour outside of Rapid City (depending on traffic/road conditions); both Spearfish and Roughlock Falls are easy hikes, one on either side of Spearfish Lodge.

I can see why Frank Lloyd Wright was so impressed. Took the scenic byway from the southern end- we had lunch in Lead and we driving back to Spearfish. My husband, unfortunately had to drive, so he missed much of it.

Driving down Spearfish Canyon is a must if your in the Rapid City area. Narrow canyon walls rising from Spearfish Creek offers views close and always upward. Above the slopes, the skyline is topped with a ridge of vertical walled limestone cliffs. There are several picturesque waterfalls in the canyon along with other pullouts along the byway. If you have packed your lunch, included near the middle of your drive down the canyon is a picnic area with several picnic tables and rest rooms.
