Sand Dunes Resort & Spa
Ranked #155 of 208 Hotels in Myrtle Beach

We stayed in the penthouse at Sand Dunes last week. We usually stay at Baywatch. But this year we took the kids plus grandkids. So we wanted to stay where we had plenty of room plus a water park for the grandkids.

The penthouse is beautiful and there was plently of room for 7 adults and 4 kids. There wasn't alot of cooking pans or utenils.

We saw roaches the first day we were there. They came and sprayed but we continued to see both alive and dead roaches everyday. we called the front desk again and was told there was roaches because we were in the south. I have stayed in Myrtle beach for the past 19 years and have never found roaches.

Also one the adults got up with bites all over so we think it was bed bugs.

We stayed at this property last year (2007) and the room was decent. This year we booked a two bedroom penthouse. There is a reason that the website doesn't show pictures of this room. It was the worst room we have ever stayed in....and was expensive. There was a horrible oder in the kitchen...to the point we even bought air freshners to help mask the smell. The house keeping manager had someone bring an "ionizer" to help rid of the oder but it didn't help. The celiling was falling apart. The bathrooms were nasty and the fixtures didn't work properly. There was a pair of dirty underwear in one of the bathrooms. Some of the lights worked some didn't....the oceanfront glass leaked badly during a storm. The two of the three tv's didn't work. The carpet was so nasty that we wore shoes until we were about to put our feet in the bed. Each of the AC vents were sweating so bad they dripped in the floor, the couch, etc. We had cockroaches in the main bedroom. It was completely the worst experience that I have ever had. We shorted our vacation because of the hotels conditions. I reported this to the hotel front desk manager but they didn't really care and they couldn't move us because they had overbooked!

I called the hotel directly to book a room just 3 days prior to our arrival. The rates were going up after this weekend so we decided to book the room. The nice lady explained everything to us and told us the rate for the Hard Rock package for 2 nts./3 days and 4 tickets to Hard Rock, which was $581.80. I am on a tight budget and had to plan this trip down to the dollar, mind you, and when we got to the hotel, the rate magically changed to $613. 80 and they could not explain the difference, nor did they offer to keep it at the price qouted to me. All good, we took it. Because of the higher rate, I decided to charge $100 on my credit card and the remaining balance on my debit card. When they swiped the credit card, I was told there was a problem with the card and asked if I had a different card to use. So I pulled out another credit card and they swiped it as well, having the same problem. I knew I had money available on both cards (though not much) and they quickly told me they had a problem with their computers, so they offered to make a "hard imprint" and submit it for payment that way. After that, we decided to go eat, and I used the credit card that the hotel didn't make a "hard imprint" of and guess what happened?? My credit card company said they HAD charged the card and I didn't have enough funds to cover our lunch, resulting in the restaurant asking for payment from different source. Great... then I went back to the hotel and asked them to destroy the hard copy of the other credit card, which the front desk clerk that originally caused this problem seemed confused and didn't know what I was talking about, but someone else eventually helped him to understand what happened and they destroyed the credit slip because they already had the $100. Later that evening we went to eat dinner and guess what happened next....because the hotel had swiped both cards when they said their computer was malfunctioning, I was charged $100 on BOTH cards, $100 more than my room rate. Needless to say, I had to pull out my debit card again.... I went back to the hotel and asked for a manager, who ended up being extremely rude and unsympathetic to their mistake and although he agreed to talk to my credit card company, he could not give them the merchant code or approval code to release ONE of the charges. He didn't know it. Said I had to wait until the "settlement" for them to see that we were charged twice, even though the credit card company told them they did. The next morning I went to the desk and asked for the General Manager and explained AGAIN what had taken place. The very nice lady quickly responded by pulling a copy of the receipt (that I never got) and eagerly spoke to my credit card company and got the hold released immediately. I guess the squeeky wheel gets the grease..... Watch your money here and keep trying if 2 or 3 people can't resolve your problems.
