You get ferried to the island on an old paddle boat and the views along the way are good. We saw a few dolphins jumping out of the water. I was surprised that they didn't serve snacks or drinks on the boat--maybe we traveled on an off day. They didn't have personal tours available that day, but they gave us a great map with information about all the historical sites on the island. We had a golf cart waiting for us at the General Store and were free to explore the island on our own. If you like Pat Conroy books, he wrote about his teaching experiences on the island back in the 60s. It was really cool to see the school house and surrounding areas.

The whole day was very enjoyable. We opted for the bus tour as we thought we would get local flavor and were not disappointed. Ed was great - dry sense of humor, friendly and knowledgeable. Golf cart option looked a bit dusty and you would miss a lot of stuff that Ed knows. He's been at this for 11 years. Only criticism was difficulty hearing the speakers on the boat ride over. Need better, clearer sound system.
This tour is not your usual in that you will see back country and small stuff, rather than the big stuff you see on city tours. Very cool.

Great tour boat called the Delta Lady. It’s a paddlewheeler with an inside bar. Trip to Freeport Marina on Daufuskie is beautiful and the Captain provides interesting historical and wildlife info. Easy to see dolphins on the way as well as pelicans. Golf Cart was included in the package and was great for exploring the island, which is laid back and a trip back in time. The beach on Daufuskie is awesome. You could spend the whole day there if you wear your suit. Probably the best place to visit on the island and spend some time is the Bloody Point Lighthouse at the south end. There is a museum and gift shop with a great 10 minute video on the history of the lighthouse, which must be seen to understand that the lighthouse was what they call a range light, i.e. it originally had 2 lights. FYI - the white house is the lighthouse, as there is no traditional tower. They also let you taste some scuppernong wine. The grounds include a new vineyard, 300 year old oak tree, cotton, indigo, Carolina gold rice, an eagle's nest viewing area and a small gator in the lagoon named Papy. Something for everyone, couples and families. We also had the Daufuskie deviled crab at the Old Daufuskie Crab Co.[woman that makes it is an original Gullah] and tried the Scrap Iron drink and both were quite good. Plan to go back in a couple of months. Island has some high end areas and other areas with people just getting by, which is more the history of the island. If you like nature, a little history, and island and Gullah culture you will love Daufuskie, but if you’re looking for a Starbucks, etc... you should remain on Hilton Head. The crew and other tour folks were all very helpful and fun. Listened to beach music on the return trip while having a drink sitting on the bow of the boat. Very relaxing and a great day!

Our group had perfect weather for our boat ride to Daufuskie Island. We opted for the tour instead of the golf carts, giving we would learn more. It was all we hoped for and more, the island having gone through so many layers of history. We were privileged to have Wick, captain and tour company owner, as our guide. His experience of having come there in the 70s and avid love of history made him a knowledgeable and interesting guide. It was his deep respect, admiration, and affection for those who have lived there and been his friends that gave life to his fascinating stories. That's the kind of person you really want to hear about a
place from! Our favorite spot was the beautiful church and praise house,a testimony of people with a passion and heart for Jesus Christ.
I had first heard about this place when years ago I watched the movie, Conrack, about Pat Conroy's time teaching school there. It was wonderful to hear "the rest of the story," or more of the real story behind a place, a people, and a way of life.

Unfortunate bad experience with Calibogue Cruises last weekend. Their website, enjoydaufuskie.com, gave very general info (no prices for the ferry ride, for example) of ferry service from HHI to Daufuskie. After a 1.5 hour drive to the Marina we were met with an unfriendly woman who sold us three ferry tickets and a "mandatory" (?) golf cart rental, for $152. A little steep, but we figured what the heck, it will be a nice day trip. While waiting in the parking lot (no area to sit) she came over and told us that the times on the tickets were wrong - that the ferry would depart earlier and come home later, and there "were no other options." These were not the times on the website; she said, "Oh, well the website is wrong and we changed things." Ugh. We got in line to get a refund, ironically behind a woman also complaining about incorrect website info and also requesting a refund. Odd experience with little customer service.
