Owner description: Calibogue Cruises is the best way to travel to Daufuskie Island, learn fun historical facts about the area, and to see Atlantic Bottle Nose Dolphin! Daufuskie Island is a very beautiful Island accessible only by boat. There are very few cars on the Island. Most of the residents and all tourists travel by golf cart. Exploring the Island is peaceful and very scenic. We also offer guided tours on the Island. Our experienced, colorful tour guides share knowledge and fun stories of the Daufuskie Island. If you have never visited Daufuskie, we highly recommend attending a guided tour first! Our company has been bringing people to and from Daufuskie Island for over 30 years. Freeport Marina is the true gateway to the Island, and we can't wait to meet you. Come visit us soon!

Unfortunate bad experience with Calibogue Cruises last weekend. Their website, enjoydaufuskie.com, gave very general info (no prices for the ferry ride, for example) of ferry service from HHI to Daufuskie. After a 1.5 hour drive to the Marina we were met with an unfriendly woman who sold us three ferry tickets and a "mandatory" (?) golf cart rental, for $152. A little steep, but we figured what the heck, it will be a nice day trip. While waiting in the parking lot (no area to sit) she came over and told us that the times on the tickets were wrong - that the ferry would depart earlier and come home later, and there "were no other options." These were not the times on the website; she said, "Oh, well the website is wrong and we changed things." Ugh. We got in line to get a refund, ironically behind a woman also complaining about incorrect website info and also requesting a refund. Odd experience with little customer service.

We wanted to check out Daufuski Island during our visit to Hilton Head and the only way to get there is by boat. Since we were there after the peak season, I didn’t think that there would be any issues with showing up the day of our desired day trip for the boat trip. In hindsight make your reservations ahead of time and avoid holding up the line to process our charge for those just checking in. A parking lot is available for those on the cruise.

The paddleboat ride took about hour to and from the island and along the way the captain provides interesting narration and history of the area and of Daufuski Island. Along the way he pointed out dolphins in the distance, but none of them came in really close to the boat. Rest rooms are available on board as well as back at the registration office. Be sure you are back at the dock for the only one return trip back unless you’re staying overnight in one of the cabins. On the return trip, the captain pointed out areas where Hurricane Mathew devastated a marina with boats cast about on shore. Sunset arrives earlier in November and the timing on our return from the island at 4:00 pm gave us a spectacular sunset to enjoy as we pulled into the dock.

The round trip package included the use of a golf cart, the only transportation means on the island, for a self-guided tour of the island with the help of a provided map that you can pick up at the check-in counter. Be sure to take any restroom breaks before heading out as the restrooms are far and few between, especially if many of the stores are closed on the day you visit. When we visited, the island was still cleaning up from Hurricane Mathew and not many of the stores were opened, but we were still able to scoot around the island enjoying the experience. We did take advantage of the restroom found at the light house and took a break with some wine tasting. We arrived around 11:00 am and it was too early for us to eat lunch and didn’t want to hang around at the only restaurant that was opened, but headed out to get in as much of our island excursion as possible. Plan to allow at least 4 hours getting around the island and back, especially if you spend more time on the beach area on the opposite side of the island from the marina.

Pack a picnic. We had brought snacks and water with us, but you can purchase snacks at a little market when checking out the cart. Half way through our wandering, a belt broke and was quickly rescued with a replacement cart. Glad cell service is available on the island. While waiting we found out that mosquitos were still around even in November. Many of the ‘roads’ are dirt and some barely recognizable when it looks like a wide path with overgrown vegetation in some areas. Be sure to have a map and really pay attention to the signs.

This was a beautiful night. We had the boat to ourselves at first. We saw many dolphins and the captain slowed down and pointed them out. We stopped at an island to pick up people from a day trip and headed back. The sun started to go down; stunning colors. More dolphins. Beautiful night.

The trip itself was fine with the boat. But the check-in process (even off season) was painful. We got to the marina on time only to find the line was 30 people long, with people who had arrived a half hour earlier than the scheduled check-in time and only 1 person checking everyone in. The narration on the boat was very good and they stopped so the passengers could appreciate a large pod of dolphins. We arranged for the golf cart on Daufuskie through the tour group and had understood that we were reserving a 4-person golf cart with a cd player to be able to take a self guided tour with a CD explanation of what we were seeing. In fact, our golf cart was 2 people, no CD player, and we were very worried the battery was going to die or explode before we returned it 4 hours later. In the passenger seat you could not put your feet on the floor or the battery behind the seat would burn your calves. The return boat trip was better organized and left on time.

One major concern is that we made our reservation online and they confirmed with an email that included our credit card number. The reservation system appears to be compleley unsecured. To all people considering this, call for your reservation to see if that protects your credit card information better.

We really enjoyed this trip. We took the ferry over to Daufuskie Island and then came back. We saw a about ten Dolphins. We had one playing with the boat jumping out of the water right in front of us. This ride was amazing.
